The Crimson Tide Stops Just in Time
Sometimes, the best thing a football team can do is stop playing football for a week. For the Alabama Crimson Tide, an October 31 bye week arrived right when the roster needed it most, carrying a 6-2 overall record and a 4-2 mark in SEC play into the break.

The team’s 31-20 victory over Texas A&M snapped a two-game losing streak, providing a much-needed emotional bounce-back after disappointing performances against Georgia and Tennessee. Yet, that fourth-quarter surge against the Aggies also laid bare the exact vulnerabilities that have dogged Kalen DeBoer’s squad all season.
Eight consecutive weeks of SEC-caliber competition take a heavy physical and mental toll. Players are nursing bumps, bruises, and lingering exhaustion, leaving the training staff with plenty of ground to cover during the pause.
Fixing the Offensive Imbalance
Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb faces the most urgent assignment of the coaching staff during this downtime. While quarterback Keelon Russell threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns against Texas A&M, the Crimson Tide managed a meager 68 rushing yards.
That kind of offensive one-dimensionality will not survive the grueling November schedule ahead. Grubb must use the extra preparation window to evaluate his offensive line, spark a reliable rushing attack, and find a way for Alabama to start games with the same urgency it reserves for comeback scenarios.
The defense under coordinator Kane Wommack also earned a reprieve after holding the Aggies to just 15 yards in the final quarter. Still, secondary growing pains, coverage communication issues, and tackling inconsistencies have left the unit looking dominant one possession and vulnerable the next.
The November Gauntlet Ahead
When Alabama returns to the field, the margin for error shrinks to practically zero. The Crimson Tide travels to Baton Rouge to face LSU on November 7, heads to Vanderbilt on November 14, and ultimately closes the regular season with the Iron Bowl against Auburn on November 28.

History offers a glimmer of encouragement. Under Kalen DeBoer, Alabama holds a 4-0 record in games immediately following a bye week. Past success, however, guarantees nothing for a team still searching for its definitive identity.
Talent alone does not win championships. Execution does.
