Amazon Montgomery County Community Fund Awards $150,000 to 16 Local Organizations

Sixteen organizations across Montgomery County, Missouri, are putting local ideas into action after receiving grants of up to $12,000 from the Amazon Montgomery County Community Fund. The $150,000 total distribution targets nonprofits, schools, and community groups working on food access, STEAM education, workforce development, digital skills, and veterans support. Recipients were officially recognized on October 29 during a celebration at The Rotunda at Washington St. in Hermann, Missouri.

In this room are people who feed their neighbors, care for our veterans, teach kids to build robots and grow food forests, keep our seniors connected, and make sure families in our small towns have the same opportunities as anyone else, said Afrika Alsup, Regional Community Engagement Manager at Amazon.

Funding Basic Needs and Safety Nets in Missouri

A significant portion of the grants aims to strengthen the local safety net. The Hermann Community Food Pantry secured the fund’s largest single grant at $12,000 to expand its operational capacity for families across the Hermann area. Additional food security efforts include Street Patrol addressing local hunger and Neighborhood Forest planting a food forest that blends long-term food access with environmental stewardship. Meanwhile, the Montgomery County Health Department is launching a specialized diaper program designed to ease financial pressures on young families in the region.

Educational initiatives form another core pillar of the distribution. The Wellsville-Middletown R1 school district is establishing a Tiger Robotics program to introduce students to competitive robotics. The Montgomery County 4-H Council and Youth In Need are expanding STEAM programming across the county and into early childhood settings to foster critical thinking early on. On the economic front, Per Scholas is delivering technology training for careers in the tech sector, while Revival KC is introducing digital opportunity programming through its DOT initiative.

Community Spaces and Economic Growth Strategies

Physical infrastructure received targeted investments to maintain local gathering points. The Montgomery City Lions Club and the New Florence Lion’s Club are both reinvesting in their respective community buildings. Other recipients include the Wellsville Community Athletic League for ballpark improvements, the Montgomery County Senior Center for facility upgrades, and the Montgomery City Memorial VFW Post 4436 to fund its National Home Store supporting veterans and their families.

The Hermann Area Chamber of Commerce received $5,000 to develop a housing and workforce strategy, addressing regional growth needs. Our community needs some more families to move into our school district, Melissa Lensing, executive director of the Hermann Area Chamber of Commerce, noted that local school, hospital, and ambulance districts all extend into Montgomery County.

Data Center Expansion and Community Pushback

The community fund rollout coincides with broader discussions surrounding major technology infrastructure in the region. Amazon has announced a planned investment of several billion dollars in Montgomery County to build a state-of-the-art data center campus, and is exploring an expansion looking at a second data center site in the county, while Google builds a massive data center campus nearby across Interstate 70. The first Amazon data center is expected to be online in June of 2027.

While corporate representatives emphasize long-term partnerships—with Alsup stating that Amazon intends to keep investing directly in the community for as long as it operates there—some residents remain skeptical. Local residents voiced environmental and economic concerns, questioning the fairness and desirability of heavy tech infrastructure despite the localized grant awards.
