Amazon Shuffles Alexa Leadership Following Premium Tablet Launch

Amazon debuted three Android-powered Alexa tablets on October 8, 2026, shifting from its budget-friendly Fire lineup to a premium tier starting at $230 and reaching $550. The hardware shift introduces generative AI capabilities through a new subscription service and coincides with an upcoming leadership shuffle in the Alexa division.

Amazon Dumps Fire Line for Android-Powered Alexa Tablets

The e-commerce giant is officially ditching its affordable Fire lineup, replacing it with three new Alexa-branded models spanning 8-inch, 11-inch, and 12-inch sizes. Unlike previous iterations that ran a custom version of Android known as Fire OS with an isolated app store, the entire new series runs Google’s Android operating system out of the box and includes access to the full Google Play Store.

The lineup spans a substantial price range. The compact 8.7-inch base model starts at $230, while the 11-inch model begins at $330. At the top of the range, the 12-inch Alexa Tablet 12 Pro starts at $499 for the standard version and reaches $550 for the 128GB tier, placing Amazon’s hardware directly in competition with Apple’s iPad, which spans from $449 to $1,199.

Hardware Specifications and Pricing Across the New Lineup

The hardware overhaul introduces significant upgrades in materials, display technology, and internal components. Amazon crafted the new devices with a premium aluminum unibody construction, moving away from the plastic chassis typical of older budget models. The flagship 12 Pro features a 12-inch display with a 2.8K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, paired with an 8-core MediaTek Dimensity 8400 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. A secondary version of the 12 Pro incorporates a Nanomatte display technology developed in partnership with Corning to reduce screen glare, supporting up to 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

Model Screen Size Starting Price (US) Key Specifications

Accessories designed specifically for the top tier include the Alexa Tablet Pro Pen, which features 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, tilt recognition, a magnetic dock, and wireless charging. Amazon also introduced a magnetic Pro Keyboard that connects without requiring Bluetooth.

Panos Panay and the Decision to Drop Fire OS

For a decade and a half, Amazon sold its tablets at or near manufacturing cost, using low prices to draw consumers into its ecosystem of Prime video, books, and online retail. That approach created app limitations under the proprietary Fire OS that drew persistent customer criticism. Panos Panay, senior vice president overseeing hardware and Alexa overall, noted that shifting to standard software was a necessary evolution.

Panay acknowledged that building a premium device during a historic surge in component costs presented hurdles. Amazon denied that rising memory costs played a role in the decision to charge more, though Panay admitted that shortages made engineering a high-end device at a reasonable price point quite tricky. I think the team did a good job designing without making that trade, Panay told CNBC in an interview, adding that developers gave you the full craftsmanship of a product, but are able to keep it at that price point.

Generative AI Integration and Alexa+ Subscriptions

The tablets serve as the primary showcase for a newly overhauled version of the voice assistant powered by generative AI. Named Alexa+, the upgraded assistant is designed to handle longer prompts and operate directly across the screen interface.

A dynamic tab on the home screen offers personalized recommendations and allows users to resume reading or watching media instantly. Users invoke the assistant by speaking the wake word or pressing an Ask Alexa button. The software includes On-Screen Intelligence, a capability that lets Alexa analyze active screen content to provide suggestions or trigger actions. During a product demonstration, Panay showed the assistant observing a cooking clip on TikTok, identifying a burger press used in the video, and pulling up a shopping list where a user could complete a purchase.

Amazon Alexa Tablet Replaces Fire With a $499 iPad Rival

Meanwhile, Amazon confirmed it will continue supporting existing Fire tablets for four years after final shipments, though manufacturing of the legacy budget models has ceased.

Leadership Shakeup in the Alexa Division

The hardware launch immediately preceded a reorganization at the top of Amazon’s voice assistant division. Daniel Rausch, a 17-year Amazon veteran who has served as vice president of Alexa and Echo for over three years, is stepping down from his post next month. Rausch, who functioned as the primary public face of Alexa during global events, will transition to another role within the devices and services division in 2027.

Aidan Marcuss, currently the vice president of Fire TV, advertising, and the Amazon Appstore, will step in to replace Rausch. Marcuss joined Amazon from Microsoft in early 2025 and oversaw the recent release of a new Fire TV Stick model. Kevin Keith, a product and marketing vice president, will retain his current responsibilities while temporarily absorbing Marcuss’s duties.
