G20 Ministers Scrap Family Photo Over Sergey Lavrov Presence in Atlanta

Foreign ministers from G20 nations concluded two days of talks in Atlanta on Saturday without a joint communique, as deep divisions over the war in Ukraine and other global conflicts overshadowed the meeting. The summit was marked by a boycott of the traditional “family photo” due to the presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The Canceled G20 Family Photo

According to CNN, more than a third of the attending representatives threatened to walk out if forced to appear alongside Sergey Lavrov. Rather than allow the ceremony to become a diplomatic distraction, the State Department opted to forgo the image entirely.

European diplomats were vocal about the decision. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that there was no normality with Russia, while Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski noted that it is very difficult to agree a common line when active combatants are sitting at the same table. The absence of the photo reflects a broader shift; as Türkiye Today observes, the no photo, no communique approach has become a new, albeit grim, tradition for the forum since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. During the Atlanta gatherings, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed participants at a welcome reception hosted at the Georgia Aquarium, where attendees viewed aquatic life alongside display screens. The formal sessions also brought together international counterparts such as Mexico’s Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, and Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. On the sidelines of the event, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan finalized a participation agreement for his country’s Expo 2030, while Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held talks to work out tactical solutions regarding the war in Ukraine.

Diplomatic Confrontations over Ukraine

While the summit failed to produce a consensus statement, the sessions provided a venue for direct, heated exchanges. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told Agence France-Presse that ministers were able to address Lavrov directly regarding what they termed lies about the conflict. Kallas noted that despite any verbal claims made by Moscow, their actual deeds pointed in a different direction.

Let me say this directly to the Russian Foreign Minister: We all know who the aggressor in this war is.

President Donald Trump’s administration has engaged with Moscow. When questioned by journalists on the sidelines, Lavrov stated regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s stance on meeting Ukrainian leadership that Putin indicated if Volodymyr Zelenskyy is willing to meet, he can come to Moscow, adding that safety would be guaranteed. South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola’s spokesperson, Phindile Kunene, emphasized regarding their absence that their nonparticipation was not voluntary.

State Department Approval of Patriot Missile Sale

Amid the diplomatic friction, the US administration announced a major military development. On Friday, the State Department approved the sale of Patriot air defense interceptors to Ukraine for an estimated $2.1 billion. While the approval is significant, the actual delivery timeline remains distant.

Two sources briefed on the matter indicated that the missiles have yet to be manufactured and are not expected to arrive in Ukraine until the early 2030s. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the long-term nature of the deal in a post on X, suggesting that US and European allies might need to find a way to provide currently stockpiled PAC-3 interceptors to bridge the gap until the new units are ready. Additionally, a humanitarian convoy arrived in the city to provide food and medicine and evacuate those wishing to leave, with U.S. First Lady Melania Trump posting on social media that the convoy could safely evacuate more than 750 people.

Shifting Attendance and Membership Disputes

The composition of the guest list in Atlanta also highlighted emerging power dynamics. South Africa, a formal member of the G20, was notably absent after the US withheld an invitation. According to Open Magazine, Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously criticized South Africa’s domestic policies and its conduct during its own G20 presidency in December 2025. The forum itself consists of 21 members, comprising 19 individual countries, the European Union, and the African Union—an expansion famously recalled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the New Delhi summit on September 9 following India’s proposal for permanent African Union membership.

Conversely, Poland received an invitation and participated in the discussions, with Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski confirming that Warsaw is actively lobbying for permanent membership. Russia has reportedly opposed this expansion, leaving the future of the group’s composition as a point of contention heading into the G20 leaders summit, which is scheduled to take place in Miami in December.
