Andy Barr Wins Kentucky Senate Seat Over Charles Booker

Kentucky voters have chosen to send Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Barr to the U.S. Senate, elevating the longtime congressman to fill the vacancy left by the retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell. Barr secured the seat by defeating Democratic challenger Charles Booker, a former state representative from Louisville, according to unofficial results cited by the Kentucky Lantern.

The Associated Press called the race at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, with Barr capturing 55% of the vote to Booker’s 43%. The outcome brings a definitive close to a high-stakes cycle in Central Kentucky, setting up a transition of power in a seat held by McConnell since 1984.

A Vision for the Commonwealth and Washington

Addressing supporters at his election night watch party in Lexington, Barr laid out an optimistic framework for his upcoming tenure in Washington. He emphasized economic growth, lower consumer prices, and strict adherence to constitutional guardrails.

“Let me tell you, I have a vision for Kentucky,” Barr said in his acceptance speech. “My vision is optimistic. It’s a future defined by prosperity, opportunity, and growth. From Pikeville to Paducah, from Covington to Corbin, and everywhere in between, it’s time for Kentucky to become even stronger. It’s time for paychecks to go up and prices to come down.”

Barr enters the Senate after representing Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District since 2012. That open congressional seat subsequently went to Democrat Zach Dembo, who defeated Republican Ralph Alvarado in the general election.

Throughout the campaign, Barr leaned heavily on his alignment with President Donald Trump, who endorsed him following a competitive primary battle against former Attorney General Daniel Cameron and businessman Nate Morris. Barr argued that maintaining a close working relationship with the administration would grant him immediate influence in advocating for Kentucky constituents at the federal level.

Booker Urges Supporters to Continue Community Advocacy After Defeat

For Charles Booker, the general election defeat marks the conclusion of another statewide bid following his previous runs for the U.S. Senate in 2020 and 2022. Speaking to supporters at a downtown Louisville watch party at the Galt House, Booker focused on hope and the importance of community.

“Although this election did not go the way that I wished it would, we are still here with the opportunity to continue bending the arc that Dr. King spoke of,” Booker told the crowd. “So my ask of you is to keep going, keep standing up, keep speaking up, keep showing love, keep lifting up the power of community.”

Booker framed his campaign around the immediate financial pressures facing everyday residents, pointing to rising costs for fuel and groceries, alongside broader economic anxieties. Despite the loss, he signaled that his political engagement across the commonwealth is far from finished.

The vote totals remain unofficial.
