Hartford Defeats Gordon College 3-0 to Reach Conference of New England Final

The Hartford women’s soccer team secured a 3-0 victory against Gordon College on Tuesday night, advancing to host the Conference of New England (CNE) Championship for the third consecutive season. The Hawks capitalized on early chances to command the match.

Hartford opened the scoring in the 16th minute when sophomore Anastasia Nerney found freshman Taylor Freimuth, who flicked the ball over Gordon goalkeeper Ivy Daniel. Just three minutes later, the Hawks doubled their lead. Senior Morgan Egan served a free kick into the box, and Daniel dropped the catch, allowing freshman Olivia Fuimara to head the loose ball into the net.

Hartford Defense Holds off Gordon Attack

Gordon fought to cut into the deficit as Willow Forbes-Smith sent an attempt just wide in the 27th minute. Eowyn Lapp tested Hartford freshman goalkeeper Madelyn Nunnemacher in the 43rd minute, and Nunnemacher made the save; Lapp’s final attempt of the half, with five seconds remaining, went well off target.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Freimuth tested Daniel in the 49th minute before Nerney extended the lead to 3-0 in the 56th minute, converting a goal off an assist from Fuimara. Nunnemacher turned away another attempt from Lapp in the 63rd minute. Gordon outshot Hartford 15-7 overall, but the Hawks put five shots on target compared to the Scots’ four, maintaining control until the final whistle.

“We knew that we needed to see the ball hit the back of the net today,” said sophomore Anastasia Nerney. “We worked on our shooting and playing out of the back this week and it benefited us today. We know every team is good and confident at this point in the season, so we really have to come together as a team. It starts with our defense winning the 50-50 balls and then relying on the rest of our team to come together.”

Daniel stopped two shots for Gordon, which concluded its season with a 9-6-3 record.
