Atlanta United Eliminated After Late New York City FC Wondergoals
Atlanta United saw their 2026 Major League Soccer campaign come to a definitive end on Wednesday night, falling 2-1 to New York City FC at Citi Field. A late goal from Breel Embolo gave the visitors life, but a stoppage-time wondergoal from Bénie Traoré sealed their elimination from playoff contention.
The 5-Stripes arrived in New York needing maximum points and favorable results elsewhere to keep their postseason aspirations alive. For long stretches of the evening, they played like a side desperate to survive. Atlanta dominated the early exchanges, building a 1.1 to 0.3 expected goals advantage by halftime while stifling their hosts in the midfield.
Early Dominance and Disallowed Opportunities
Atlanta established control straight from the whistle. Júnior Alonso uncorked a long-distance strike in the 2nd minute that soared over and into the stands. Minutes later, Miguel Almirón carved out space to cross, finding Giuliano Galoppo for a first-time volley that drifted just wide of the left post.

The visiting side thought they had broken through in the 22nd minute. Breel Embolo appeared to have opened the scoring with a header, assisted by another header from Júnior Alonso. However, a video review intervened, ruling that Alonso stood in an offside position before receiving the cross from Alexey Miranchuk.
Despite the setback, Atlanta continued applying pressure. Miranchuk was denied in a one-on-one opportunity by a sharp Matt Freese save in the 14th minute, and Tristan Muyumba forced another stop with a tight-angled free kick before the half-hour mark. Lucas Hoyos, stepping into the starting lineup without much rhythm, made an important leg save in the 42nd minute to deny Nicolás Fernández, preserving a scoreless deadlock heading into the intermission.
Late Heroics and the Deciding Blow
The second half transformed into an open, frantic affair as both clubs realized a draw would likely end their postseason ambitions. NYCFC began finding transitional gaps, testing Hoyos with a dangerous three-on-three counterattack in the 58th minute that ended with another crucial save by the goalkeeper.
The deadlock finally broke in the 70th minute. After Tristan Muyumba fouled Nicolás Fernández near the top of the box, Fernández stepped up and laced an extraordinary free kick into the bottom right corner, past a helpless Hoyos, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

Atlanta refused to fold. Substitute Fafa Picault injected immediate energy down the flanks, whipping a dangerous cross into the box in the 83rd minute. In the 88th minute, Picault unleashed a long-range effort that clanked off the post. The rebound fell kindly to Embolo, who tapped in a header to level the match at 1-1 and restore a lifeline for the visitors.
That lifeline lasted only until stoppage time. In the 95th minute, Traoré unleashed a right-footed strike that rose up into the right corner of the net, beyond the reach of an outstretched Hoyos. The stunning individual effort secured a 2-1 victory for New York City and formally ended Atlanta’s playoff contention.
Looking Ahead to the Home Finale
