Barcelona Targets RB Leipzig Defender Castello Lukeba for Summer Move

According to SPORT, RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba is now Barcelona’s main choice to strengthen the centre-back spot. The French defender has made a significant move towards a possible transfer to Catalonia by switching his agents and joining the agency that also oversees Barça star Jules Kounde, ‘Excellence Sport’.

Barcelona’s Interest in Lukeba

Barcelona have been monitoring Lukeba for quite some time. His performances with RB Leipzig have established him as one of the most talented young centre-backs in Europe. The 23-year-old is a left-footed central defender whose physical strength, aerial ability, composure in possession, and ground speed make him a suitable addition for Barcelona’s high-defensive line system under Hansi Flick. He is seen as a more appealing target compared to Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni.

Barcelona Target Lukeba After Meeting

Barcelona are understood to be Lukeba’s preferred destination in his search for a project capable of competing for major trophies. His change of representation could help facilitate discussions over a possible move. The Blaugrana’s sporting director Deco recently held a meeting with a representative from Excellence Sport, with a move for the Frenchman among the topics discussed.

Lukeba's Release Clause Drops in June

A January transfer is deemed very improbable, as RB Leipzig are not prepared to let the defender depart during the winter transfer window. The circumstances might shift in the summer, as Lukeba’s release clause is scheduled to fall from €80 million to €65 million in June, giving Barcelona a chance. That amount may be subject to further negotiation if the player makes his desire for a move to Catalonia known. His salary is also expected to be more manageable than that of Bastoni.
