Everden highlighted that the children who regularly use the canal for recreation are the ones worst affected by the pollution and unsightly hazards. It’s really upsetting on behalf of the children, because that’s not anything that they should ever be faced with, especially with a pet cat, Everden said, emphasizing the grim nature of what youth encounter during water activities.

Plumbing Misconnections Fuel Sewage Influx

Organiser Keane, who spearheaded the clean-up operation, pointed directly to infrastructural failures as a core driver of the waterway’s poor health. The problem is exacerbated by misconnections where housing development plumbing links incorrectly to surface water drains instead of proper sewers, pushing untreated waste straight into the canal. The big fly in the ointment is sewage coming into the canal, Keane explained, adding that the issue intensifies during summer months when the water slows down.

Keane noted that while some of the infrastructure failure is historic, contemporary misdirection of sewage into storm drains continues to plague the system.

Future Canal Usage Hinges on Drainage Fixes

Despite the severity of the pollution, Keane stated that he did not believe Hounslow Council bore the blame for the misconnections. However, he emphasized that the chronic pollution issues require urgent attention if authorities want to encourage and develop recreational usage of the canal, particularly for children on the water.
