California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on Thursday that 11 firearms were seized at a residential care home in Concord last week and an employee was arrested. The California Department of Justice executed a search warrant at the home on Oct. 29, 2026, and recovered the weapons.
Firearms Found at Care Home
The care home, which was not identified, housed elderly residents and infant children. Agents recovered 11 firearms, including eight assault weapons. The firearms were found in an upstairs area of the residential care home. A worker at the home, identified in court documents as Alekisanita Mataele, was arrested following the search.
Charges Filed
DOJ will be prosecuting the case. The charges brought against Mataele consist of one felony count for importing an assault weapon, nine felony counts for unlawful possession of an assault weapon, one felony count for importing a large-capacity magazine, and one misdemeanor count for unsafe storage of a firearm allowing access to a child or prohibited person. It is important to note that charges are merely allegations and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Official Statement
A residential care setting is supposed to be a sanctuary of safety and protection. Introducing firearms into an environment dedicated to providing care raises serious concerns about the well-being of those who depend on these facilities as well as the safety of the individuals working in the facilities,
said Bonta in a statement. Our special agents work tirelessly to protect California’s most vulnerable residents and keep our communities safe. I commend the dedicated agents at the California Department of Justice for their work in recovering these firearms.
