Capt. Mary’s Pub Opens as New Sapphic Bar in New Orleans Marigny

A new, nautical-themed bar for lesbians and other sapphics has opened at 940 Elysian Fields Ave. in the Marigny. Capt. Mary’s Pub operates daily from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. and is located in a historic space with ties to New Orleans gay-rights icon Charlene Schneider.

The bar is owned by Zalia BeVille, who also operates The AllWays Lounge & Cabaret on St. Claude Avenue. BeVille said she was approached about the Elysian Fields space, which was most recently Mag’s 940 until its closure in July, quite some time ago. The idea to create a neighborhood pub was solidified when a queer friend expressed a lack of comfortable places to watch the World Cup games over the summer, prompting BeVille’s “brain [to go] ‘ding.’”

A Neighborhood Pub with Sapphic Programming

Capt. Mary’s is designed to fill a gap for the LGBTQ community, functioning as a neighborhood pub with a focus on sapphic programming. The bar features two big-screen TVs, a pool table, and an affordable drink selection centered on favorites like pitchers of beer. BeVille hopes the venue will become the community’s go-to spot for watching women’s sports and cheering on New Orleans teams like the Saints and Pelicans.

A Historic Location with Community Roots

The location holds historical significance within New Orleans’ LGBTQ community. From 1977 to 1999, it was home to Charlene’s, a renowned lesbian bar run by activist Charlene Schneider. Schneider fought for tangible change, including pushing for the city’s anti-discrimination ordinance passed in 1991. BeVille said Capt. Mary’s leans lesbian as an homage to Schneider.

A small space in the back of the bar will host community events, including dance parties, live music, tarot readings, haircuts, and voter registration. BeVille emphasized the desire to enhance the neighborhood rather than compete with other queer bars, stating, A rising tide raises all ships.

An Inclusive Space for Chosen Family

While the bar leans lesbian, all are welcome at Capt. Mary’s. The main section is designed to be free and open to the public, even when ticketed events are happening in the back. BeVille aims to create a permanent spot for lesbians while maintaining a neighborhood feel, where dogs are usually welcome and salty pub mix is always available.

We want it to feel like a place to meet your chosen family, BeVille said.
