Coach Fetcho Reacts to SIU Men’s Golf Ka’anapali Classic Finish

Southern Illinois men’s golf wrapped up its fall schedule at the Ka’anapali Classic by OUTRIGGER in Lahaina, Hawaii, finishing 17th in the team standings at 33-over par.

The Salukis improved their score over the course of the three-round tournament, posting rounds of 17-over, 11-over, and 5-over. Jamen Sanders led the team individually, tying for 70th place at 8-over par after closing the event with a 1-under 70 on the final day. Emil Elkjaer Petersen finished tied for 74th at 9-over par following a final-round 74, while Oliver Ulrich shot an even-par 71 to finish tied for 77th at 10-over. River Stilley tied for 85th at 11-over, and Michael Mikus finished tied for 102nd at 15-over. Cy Norman and Francis Lockwood competed as individuals, with Lockwood tying for 116th at 19-over and Norman placing 123rd at 24-over.

Head coach Justin Fetcho pointed to difficult weather conditions as a factor during the week in Hawaii. The weather presented some challenges for us this week and unfortunately we just didn’t handle it well enough.

With the fall slate concluded, the program turns its attention to the upcoming months to address unforced errors and decision-making before the spring season begins.

We are just making too many careless or unforced errors when we play and we just have to continue to focus on playing the game from strength instead of the course applying the pressure to us, Fetcho said.

The offseason will involve both physical development and mental preparation to find more consistent scoring. Our focus in the offseason will be a lot of mental stuff but each player has some things physically that we have to work on to continue to work on our development, Fetcho said. It starts at the top with me on making sure we can continue to work extremely hard on the areas of the game that are causing us to not score consistently enough.

Southern Illinois will return to competition on February 22 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate to open the spring portion of its schedule.
