Financing Deal Clears Path for Downtown Venue
Union Omaha COO Alexis Boulos framed the project’s broad community ambitions simply: And I think if we can take that model and bring it to women’s sports, we have a whole new community of young female athletes that would be excited, and families who would be excited to come support both teams.
The Omaha City Council has officially approved a financing deal for a downtown soccer stadium near 11th and Izard, WOWT reported. The agreement allows up to $106.5 million in financing for a stadium aimed at bringing in crowds for both men’s and women’s sports.
A Dual-Tenant Timeline Set Through 2030
The development blueprint targets a 2028 move-in date for Union Omaha’s men’s team, aligning with the projected completion of construction. Organizers then aim to add a women’s professional team to the facility by 2030, though no league or roster has been announced for the women’s team.
Riding a Wave of Local Women’s Sports Momentum
In May, The Supernovas set a United States attendance record for an indoor women’s professional volleyball match, proving the local market’s appetite for major women’s athletic events.
Daniella Pappas, assistant girls director at Sporting Nebraska FC, noted that young players currently look primarily to the collegiate ranks for inspiration. Having a professional locally, Pappas told WOWT, changes that entirely.
Community Integration Through the Female Lens
Having a professional here locally for them would just add so much more enthusiasm to the game for them. But someone to go and watch and be like, oh, that could be me in a couple years. Or I could go and play here locally after college.
Pappas emphasized that community integration must be built intentionally around the female demographic, picturing professional players running local clinics and young athletes serving as ball kids. The planning, she argues, has to happen through the female lens.
Logistical Next Steps and Friday Playoffs
While the city council has greenlit the financing framework, several logistical steps remain on the immediate horizon. A contractor agreement returns to the council soon.
Meanwhile, the Union Omaha men’s squad turns its immediate attention away from the boardroom and toward the pitch, preparing to play a playoff match on Friday while the downtown venue moves steadily from concept toward concrete.
