Elon Men’s Soccer Falls in Coastal Athletic Association Quarterfinals to College of Charleston
Elon University men’s soccer saw its 13-game unbeaten streak and a dominant home run come to a sudden end on Nov. 5, falling 2-0 to the College of Charleston in the Coastal Athletic Association quarterfinals at Rudd Field, as reported by the Elon News Network.
Entering the postseason showdown as the No. 2 seed against the No. 3-seeded Cougars, the Phoenix could not replicate the stalemate success of their two regular-season meetings, which both ended in 1-1 draws. Neither team managed to break through during a tense, defensive opening half that featured plenty of midfield battles and early scares.
Elon’s backline was tested immediately when junior defender Kosei Sasaki got beat on a corner kick. Redshirt junior goalie Drew Hartman became entangled with a defender, forcing junior midfielder Weston Jonke to step in and block a close-range shot. Hartman soon found his footing, smothering a dangerous shot after coming out of the box at the 10-minute mark and anchoring the defense through a half that ended scoreless, with Charleston out-shooting Elon 7 to 6.
A Second-Half Surge From the Cougars Breaks Open the Match
What started as a cagey defensive duel transformed rapidly after the break. Just a minute into the second half, Charleston worked the ball to the right corner before crossing it to senior striker Matt Lenert, who softly redirected a header past Hartman’s outstretched arms to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Thirteen minutes later, Charleston struck again. Stian Bendvold drove down the right side and slipped a cross past sophomore defender Magnus Jacobsen. A Charleston striker executed a clever dummy run, jumping over the ball to fool both sophomore defender Tønnes Daland and Hartman, setting up an easy tap-in that rolled past three untouched Elon defenders.
The 2-0 deficit put the defending CAA champions in unfamiliar territory. Elon had previously played roughly 400 minutes without allowing a goal.
Missed Opportunities Seal the Phoenix’s Exit
Desperate to erase the deficit, Elon turned to its bench, bringing in fresh legs like sophomore defender Graham Jones and redshirt sophomore forward Alex Wharton to inject pace into the attack.
“They’re a very strong, organized team, mature, physical team that is tough,” Reeves said. “It’s a fantastic group of kids, men, players, and so it hurts an awful lot. Charleston’s a really strong team, and I don’t think we played great tonight. Put those two factors together, and we don’t advance.”
The Phoenix carved out their best scoring chance with roughly 15 minutes remaining when Wharton drove toward the net and drew a foul inside the box. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Oscar Tonidandel stepped up to take the penalty kick. Instead, his left-curving shot ricocheted loudly off the crossbar, sealing the team’s fate.
The 2-0 defeat not only eliminates the defending CAA champions from the tournament but also snaps a 20-match unbeaten streak at Rudd Field. Elon had not lost on its home turf since Nov. 10, 2024.
