Community Honors Veterans at National Civil War Museum Event

“It’s just a deep sense of gratitude for the sacrifices that my ancestors made, but also the many soldiers out there who are currently serving as well. So it’s just my way of saying thanks and giving back.” That sentiment, shared by a participant, captured the mood as the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg welcomed the community on Saturday for a special event honoring those who have served in the U.S. military in recognition of Veterans Day.

Museum Hosts Saturday Event Honoring Service Members

The Saturday event featured free museum admission, a flag-raising ceremony, and special guests from the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Organizers stated that the gathering provided an opportunity to bring the community together while acknowledging the sacrifices made by generations of American service members. One member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War explained that participating in the occasion was a way to honor his ancestors and demonstrate appreciation for current military personnel.

Beyond the Saturday activities, the museum honors veterans throughout the year. Its exhibits include the names of hundreds of Pennsylvania veterans who fought in the Civil War, working to preserve their legacy for future generations. One participant noted the significance of the institution itself, stating, “I think this museum, by its very existence, implies honoring veterans, which is a good thing in my mind. But in addition to that, the museum connects us to our past.”

Observance Centers on Reading Historic Muster Rolls

The museum also planned a special Veterans Day observance centered on the reading of names of Black Civil War veterans. These names were chosen from historic muster rolls, which serve as military payroll records preserved directly within the museum’s collection.

Event organizers emphasized that the reading carried special significance because the individuals being honored hold a direct connection to the institution’s historical archives. Organizers noted that the observance served as yet another opportunity to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of veterans while safeguarding their stories for the future.
