Community Rallies Around Trailblazing Former Phoenix Officer Fighting Cancer

Nancy Elam Faces Cancer Battle as Community Rallies Around Trailblazing Former Phoenix Officer

When Nancy Elam stepped onto a motorcycle for the Phoenix Police Department in 1991, she did more than just take on a new shift. She shattered a decades-old glass ceiling, becoming the very first woman to serve as a motorcycle officer in the history of the agency. Today, that same resilience is being tested in an entirely different arena, as friends, fellow retirees, and community members rally behind her during a severe health crisis.

Nancy is currently attempting new treatments for Stage IV bile duct cancer, which has since spread to her liver. This diagnosis follows a separate battle with breast cancer that she fought and conquered several years ago. Managing her healthcare has added friction to her recovery, including dealing with insurance coverage denials while she attempts advanced medical therapies.

Attitude and Support Through Hard Times

Despite the daily physical toll of Stage IV cancer and the administrative hurdles of the medical system, Elam maintains a steady perspective on her situation. She credits her support network of friends, fellow officers, and retirees with helping her manage the heavy load.

There are people out there worse off than me, Elam said, as noted by ABC15 Arizona. And I have the best help I could possibly get with friends, retirees, other officers; These are the cards I was dealt, and I just deal with it. 90% of it is your attitude. You just have to keep up and keep going.

Friends Launch Fundraising Campaign to Cover Medical Expenses

To help offset the financial strain of ongoing treatments and coverage denials, Elam’s friends have established a dedicated fundraising campaign. Supporters looking to contribute to her recovery or learn more about her ongoing journey can visit the GoFundMe page organized in her honor.
