Crystal Palace Set to Sack Pierre Sage Following Liverpool Defeat

Crystal Palace are reportedly set to part ways with manager Pierre Sage following a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, Yahoo Sports reported.

The loss leaves the London club at the bottom of the Premier League table. This defeat marks the fourth league game the Eagles have lost.

Sage was appointed as Oliver Glasner’s successor last summer on a three-year contract. His tenure in England is now expected to end during the upcoming international break.

The club's decision follows a period of poor performance on the pitch. According to reports from The Athletic, Palace currently boast the worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 24 goals so far this season.

The statistical decline for the club is stark. In their first 10 Premier League matches, the team has managed only two victories.

Looking at Sage’s overall record since taking charge, the numbers show a difficult transition:

While some analysts have pointed to the departure of key players and recruitment issues as contributing factors to this slump, concerns remain regarding Sage’s tactical approach to defending.

The Selhurst Park hierarchy is already considering candidates to steady the club. Reported names in the running for the position include Thomas Frank and Sean Dyche.

Both men recently left their previous roles, with Frank departing Tottenham Hotspur and Dyche leaving Nottingham Forest in February. Coventry City manager Frank Lampard is also said to be a favoured option by the club's leadership.

Lampard’s current side sits in 17th place in the Premier League.

Despite the looming threat of dismissal, Sage has maintained a focus on the squad’s immediate needs. Following the match against Liverpool, the former Olympique Lyonnais and RC Lens manager suggested his personal job security was secondary to the club’s stability.

“Today my job is not the most important thing, as I always said from the beginning. The most important thing is to find an efficient solution for the team and the club.”

When asked by reporters if he expected to remain in charge after the international break, Sage provided a brief response, stating, “Better than you, I think.”

The club now faces a critical period as they attempt to climb from the bottom of the table and address a defensive unit that has become the most vulnerable in the division.
