Marquette secures first postseason berth since 2017
A scoreless draw against Providence on Saturday night secured Marquette women’s soccer a spot in the Big East tournament for the first time since 2017, Anonymous Eagle reported.
The 0-0 result in the regular season finale leaves the Golden Eagles with a 7-3-9 overall record and a 3-2-5 mark in Big East conference play. While the stalemate met the mathematical requirements for a postseason appearance, the statistical dominance displayed by Marquette suggests the final score barely reflected the flow of the match.
Marquette controlled the tempo and the territory, outshooting Providence 16-4 over the 90 minutes. The pressure intensified significantly in the second half, where the Golden Eagles recorded 11 of those 16 shots, including seven of the final nine attempts of the game.
Providence goalkeeper finds rhythm
Despite the heavy offensive volume from Marquette, the Providence defense remained resilient behind the performance of Caitlin Daley. Daley recorded six saves to keep the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard, with four of those stops coming during a busy first half.
The efficiency of the Providence attack stood in stark contrast to Marquette’s inability to convert. While the Golden Eagles dominated the offensive end, their defensive unit struggled to register official statistics to match the opposition.
| Statistic | Marquette | Providence |
|---|---|---|
| Total Shots | 16 | 4 |
| Shots in Second Half | 11 | N/A |
On the defensive side, Marquette utilized a tandem of Elise Krone and Mia Hurd to manage the Providence attack. Krone played the opening 15 minutes before being replaced by Hurd, who played the remainder of the match, though neither keeper recorded an official save to secure a clean sheet of their own.
Head coach Chris Allen faces the challenge of translating high shot volume into goals as the team moves into the tournament. While the draw achieved the immediate goal of postseason qualification, the lack of clinical finishing remains a central concern heading into high-stakes matchups.
The road to the Big East title
Marquette enters the Big East tournament as the #4 seed. Their path to the championship begins on Wednesday, November 11th, at 4:00 p.m. Central, when they face top-seeded Xavier at the Maryland Sports Complex in Boyds, Maryland.
The matchup against Xavier has a long history. On October 21st, Marquette suffered a 2-1 loss to Xavier at home, a game where all three goals were scored within the first 30 minutes of play.
The tournament structure dictates that the winner of the Marquette-Xavier match will advance to the title game on November 14th. There, they will face either the #2 seed, Villanova, or the #3 seed, Seton Hall.
Fans can follow the tournament action via broadcast on ESPN+.
The Golden Eagles’ ability to find the back of the net will likely determine whether their 2017 postseason drought ends with a deep run or a quick exit.
