The number that matters is 34. That is where the Cubs’ 40-man roster stands after Chicago sent first baseman Tyler Austin outright off the roster this week, according to the MLB.com transaction log, as MLB Trade Rumors reported. Six names separate the club from a full 40. Austin is the reason the count moved.
Six Spots Short of Full
A $1.25 million contract is not pocket change. Austin signed that deal last December after six seasons with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in Japan. The right-handed hitter had mashed in his final two NPB seasons, enough to convince Cubs evaluators to take a big-league flier on a player whose last MLB appearance came in 2019. The plan was a platoon role next to Michael Busch. The knee had other ideas.

The Surgery That Ate the Spring
Austin required debridement surgery in late February to repair the patellar tendon in his right knee.
Busch Left No Room
The contrast with Busch is stark. Chicago’s first baseman hit .243/.348/.422 in 204 plate appearances against left-handed pitching in 2026 and started all but four games. That left little room for a short-side platoon first baseman or designated hitter on the active roster. Matt Shaw and Pedro Ramírez already give the Cubs utility options who can pick up scattered starts at first base if they are not moved for pitching this winter.

Thirty-Three Homers, Six Years Away
Austin is best known to most fans for his early-career stint with the Yankees. His big-league resume remains modest: a .219/.292/.451 slash line with 33 home runs across 583 plate appearances. He remains in the organization for now, but the outright gives him the right to elect free agency. Whether he tries to land a guaranteed contract back in Japan or takes another run at the Cubs is genuinely unclear.
The Arithmetic of a Write-Off
Austin mashed in his final two NPB seasons and impressed Cubs evaluators enough to secure a big league deal; he neither played in Spring Training nor during the regular season.

With Busch entrenched and Shaw and Ramírez available, the Cubs are prioritizing versatility over a dedicated platoon bat. Austin’s departure is the cleanest way to make that choice official.
