D.J. Jacobs Remains Open to Tennessee Despite Ohio State Pledge

The Recruiting Battleground for D.J. Jacobs

Five-star EDGE rusher D.J. Jacobs has maintained a verbal commitment to Ohio State since December 2025, yet his late-season exploration of other programs has turned college football recruiting on its head. As reported by Rocky Top Insider, the top prospect in the 2027 class according to 247Sports is quietly keeping his options open as signing day approaches.

While the Buckeyes hold the inside track with his signature, Tennessee has mounted a persistent push to alter the landscape. Brian Smith, host of the Locked On Transfer Portal podcast, recently shared insights on the Locked On Canes show regarding Jacobs’ recruitment cycle. Smith noted that conversations with individuals close to the family reveal a dynamic process where multiple programs remain very much alive.

“It’s ironic that we’re talking about this,” Smith said on the show. “I spoke with somebody that’s pretty close to him and his family recently. And he said Miami was definitely a possibility – this is right before he visited UM. And he said also, watch out for Tennessee. He said they’re still open to opportunities – And I didn’t know it. This was just offered to me. Somebody, like, knows that family. And I’m like, okay, if that’s the case, then anything is plausible.”

Jacobs recently traveled to Miami to witness the Hurricanes secure a 52-23 victory over Pittsburgh. Yet, the Volunteers possess unique geographic and personal advantages that keep them firmly in the conversation. The prospect’s family resides in Roswell, Georgia, placing Knoxville within comfortable proximity.

Defensive Resurgence and Personal Ties in Knoxville

Beyond geography, deep-seated staff relationships continue to fuel Tennessee’s pursuit. Rodney Garner, the Volunteers’ defensive line coach, previously coached Jacobs’ father at the University of Georgia. That historical connection provides a foundational trust.

On-field performance has further amplified the Vols’ appeal. Tennessee’s defensive unit has undergone a transformation under Jim Knowles, marking a contrast to the team’s defensive output during Tim Banks’ final season in 2025. The Volunteers lead the nation with 35 sacks, anchoring a unit that captures the attention of elite defensive recruits.

Ohio state university scratched red

Before the season began, On3’s Steve Wiltfong pointed out that Tennessee’s on-field execution would be pivotal to the Vols’ chances of landing Jacobs. That hypothesis was tested in September when Jacobs visited Knoxville to watch the Vols play Texas. Although Tennessee didn’t come away with a win, the atmosphere and defensive display left an impression.

Financial considerations, once the dominant talking point in modern recruitment, may no longer be the deciding factor. As Smith observed during his podcast appearance, the money is “insane” from all of the schools that he is looking at, shifting the battleground toward relational trust.

Ohio State remains a powerhouse accustomed to retaining elite talent, but the final weeks before signing day will test the strength of last December’s pledge. With multiple teams potentially in the running, Jacobs’ eventual destination remains anyone’s guess.
