Demetrius Montgomery Trial Continues in Alger Prison Murder Case

Witnesses Detail Tensions Leading Up to Fatal Altercation at Alger Correctional Facility

An Alger Correctional Facility inmate is standing trial for second-degree murder in Alger County Circuit Court, facing allegations that he killed a fellow prisoner during a physical fight two years ago. 47-year-old Demetrius Montgomery stands accused in the death of Drequan Glover following an altercation. While prosecutors argue the attack was criminal, the defense maintains Montgomery acted in self-defense.

The trial entered a critical phase on Tuesday as Michigan Department of Corrections inmates took the stand to recount the environment inside the facility. Jerry Weathers, who ran an inmate classroom at Alger Correctional Facility, testified about an interaction he witnessed immediately following a class on June 18th, 2024. Weathers recalled hearing Montgomery tell Glover to leave him alone, describing Glover as a physically imposing individual who projected the demeanor of a bully.

“I used to talk to him all the time about that, you know, kind of tone it down a little bit, you know what I mean? You’re trying to go home. This isn’t, you know, listen, this isn’t conducive to you going home,” Weathers said on the stand.

During cross-examination, prosecutors pressed Weathers regarding observations he made earlier that same day concerning Glover’s clothing. Weathers acknowledged telling counsel that Glover was wearing a padded jacket, agreeing with the prosecution’s suggestion that an inmate would wear such padding in anticipation of a physical assault as a preventative measure.

Testimony Continues as Prosecution Questions Extent of Force

Another incarcerated witness, Jorey McCormick, also testified regarding Glover’s reputation inside the facility, stating that Glover was known to intimidate other individuals. McCormick noted that if someone owed Glover money or anything else, Glover pursued the debt very aggressively.

Court proceedings shed light on the nicknames used by those involved, identifying Montgomery as “Meech” and Glover as “Jug.” McCormick told the court he witnessed Glover being knocked to the ground during the confrontation. When the prosecution asked how many times Montgomery struck Glover while Glover was down, McCormick answered that it was approximately six or seven times, delivered with both hands.

The defense’s presentation of witness testimony is scheduled to resume on Wednesday.
