Detroit Lions Place All-Pro Linebacker Jack Campbell on Injured Reserve Following Scary Neck Injury

Jack Campbell, the All-Pro linebacker for the Detroit Lions, has moved to the injured reserve list under a week following his hospital admission for a neck problem. The transaction, executed on Saturday, shifts the focus from the football field to a much longer recovery process.

The injury occurred early in the fourth quarter of a game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when Campbell collided with tight end T.J. Hockenson. Campbell was face down on the turf and not moving before medical personnel evaluated him, strapped him to a board, and transported him from the field on a cart.

By Wednesday, Campbell provided an encouraging update in a statement released by the team, expressing gratitude for the medical staff and detailing his physical progress.

My family and I want to sincerely thank everyone for the overwhelming amount of love, prayers, and support we’ve received over the past few days. It means more to us than words can express. I’m incredibly encouraged by the progress I’ve made in such a short period of time. I have full movement in my lower body, and I’m continuing to make progress with movement in my upper body. I know there’s still work ahead, but I remain very optimistic. I’m taking things one day at a time, staying positive, and focusing on getting better, Campbell said.

Roster Adjustments and Defensive Impact for the Lions

With Campbell sidelined for the foreseeable future, head coach Dan Campbell offered a brief assessment of the situation on Friday, noting that the linebacker continues to improve. Even so, the team’s immediate personnel decisions reflect the harsh reality of playing through an NFL season.

Along with placing Campbell on injured reserve on Saturday, the Lions added Nick Whiteside to the active roster from the practice squad. The team also promoted edge rusher Anthony Lucas and running back Jabari Small from the practice squad ahead of a Sunday matchup against Miami.

Detroit enters the game with a 5-2 record, while Miami stands at 1-6. On the field, the responsibility of filling the void left at linebacker falls heavily on Derrick Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez.
