State Representative Anthony Ealy Jr. Arrested in Jefferson City After Threatening Disturbance
A Kansas City-area lawmaker is currently sitting in the Cole County Jail following a Wednesday morning arrest in Jefferson City that authorities say involved shouted threats of violence and claims of a weapon. Jefferson City police officers responded to the 600 block of East Capitol Avenue at 11:29 a.m. on November 4, 2026, after multiple witnesses reported a man yelling outside a local business, according to krcgtv.com.
On Tuesday, 32-year-old Democratic state Representative Anthony Ealy Jr. won reelection to the 36th District, securing 68% of the vote. By Wednesday morning, police were called to the scene where a family was making arrangements for a deceased family member, as detailed in a probable cause statement cited by abc17news.com.
Charges Filed by Cole County Prosecutor
Witnesses told police that Ealy had been outside yelling, threatening violence, and claiming he had a gun. According to court documents reported by abc17news.com, Ealy lunged toward a victim and repeatedly shouted, “I’m gonna kill you. Call the police, I’m gonna kill you.” Officers subsequently located Ealy at his nearby residence on Capitol Avenue and took him into custody.
Cole County Prosecutor Locke Thompson confirmed that his office filed formal charges on Thursday. Ealy faces a class B misdemeanor for disturbing the peace and a class C misdemeanor for fourth-degree assault. He was listed on the Cole County Jail roster being held without bond and should face a judge on Friday.

Representative Ealy Loses Committee Assignments After Arrest
Ealy has represented District 36, which covers part of Jackson County, since his initial election in 2022. Following his arrest, Marc Powers, Chief of Staff for the Minority Leader’s Office, released a statement addressing the lawmaker’s standing within the caucus.
Rep. Ealy was removed from committees this spring so he could address his personal issues. There are no plans to restore his committee assignments for the upcoming session.
While the Jefferson City Police Department stated in a press release that formal charges had been filed, they did not immediately appear in online court records on Wednesday.
