Independent retailers give high streets colour and difference
while serving as an antidote to homogenised shopping districts, according to retail analysts who evaluated hundreds of thousands of customer reviews across the United Kingdom. The assessment, conducted by retail property consultancy JDM Retail, examined high streets based on their independent representation, business longevity, diversity of offer, and occupier quality.
Edinburgh Grassmarket and Historic High Streets Top the National Ranking
Scotland’s historic Old Town secured the number-one spot in the national survey. Edinburgh’s Grassmarket and its surrounding thoroughfares, including Victoria Street and Candlemaker Row, claimed first place after scoring highest for business longevity, beating competition from celebrated shopping quarters across the country.
Shrewsbury’s market town claimed second place, followed by York’s The Shambles at the number three spot, as analysts for JDM Retail carried out the survey to identify the strongest independent retail destinations on the UK high street. Sheffield’s Devonshire Quarter took fourth place, just ahead of Soho in fifth.
Workers on the ground pointed to the unique character that independent traders bring to these districts. Speaking to the press, Imogen Barr, who works at the Isle of Skye Candle Company in West Bow, noted that independent shops give the area a more local feel.
Soho Ranks in the Top Five Amid West End Challenges
Soho’s inclusion in the top five arrives during a turbulent period for the central London district. The West End neighbourhood has faced intense public debate following proposals by Westminster City Council to curb drinkers standing outside pubs and bars, a draft licensing recommendation that sparked immediate backlash from business owners and patrons alike.
Public pushback was swift, with hospitality operators warning that restricting standing room threatens their operational viability. Lesley Lewis, owner of Soho’s historic French House for 37 years, argued that the proposed regulations will kill the whole business under the weight of existing rents and business rates.
“It will really finish us off. We rely on those people standing up with the rents and the rates put upon us. People want to enjoy themselves in Soho, they want to have a drink outside, they want to dance, they don’t want to sit down and just be where they are, they want to meet people and chat.”

Despite these licensing controversies and separate concerns regarding mobile phone thefts and tourism crimes in the West End, the district continues to maintain a dense concentration of eccentric artisan stores and independent boutiques.
The Economic Formula Behind Independent Clustering
The research emphasizes that independent shops thrive best when they group together rather than operating in isolation. Analysts noted that character quarters featuring historic buildings allow towns and cities to reinforce local identity while growing their independent economies.
“The findings suggest that independent businesses perform best when they are encouraged to cluster, creating distinctive destinations that complement — rather than compete directly with — prime retail.”

Jonathan De Mello, chief executive of JDM Retail, explained that the top-ranking locations serve as a direct counterweight to standardised commercial zones. He stated that independent retailing adds colour and difference to urban environments, offering an alternative to familiar high street chains.
