Charleston Middle School and Eastern Illinois University to Hold Joint Veterans Day Program November 11
When the clock strikes 9 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, the Dvorak Concert Hall at Eastern Illinois University’s Doudna Fine Arts Center will host a gathering that bridges generations and institutions. According to WAND, Charleston Middle School and EIU will hold their annual joint Veterans Day program from 9 to 10 a.m. at 1860 7th Street in Charleston, an event that this year carries particular resonance for a community still marking its recovery from last summer’s tornado.
The ceremony represents more than a standard observance. While Veterans Day programs across the nation honor military service, this joint effort between the university and Charleston Community Unit School District #1 includes a wreath ceremony specifically dedicated to the collaborative recovery work undertaken by both institutions following the tornado. The disaster, which struck the area last summer, forced EIU and CUSD #1 to coordinate their response efforts, and Wednesday’s program formalizes that partnership through public remembrance.
Students will anchor the hour-long program with both musical and ceremonial contributions. The winner of this year’s VFW Patriot’s Pen student essay contest will be recognized, an award that highlights student engagement with veterans’ experiences. The CMS chorus and band will provide musical performances, with EIU’s calendar specifying that the choir will perform the Star-Spangled Banner, while a selected student will lead the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Military tradition will frame the proceedings through the participation of the EIU ROTC, which will present the colors and flags. The ceremony will also feature the playing of Taps and a traditional three-volley salute, honors that acknowledge those who have served and sacrificed. EIU President Dr. Jay Gatrell is scheduled to deliver remarks during the program, adding the university’s leadership voice to the commemoration alongside the recognition of a special veteran from the local community.
All veterans attending the event will receive commemorative challenge coins as tokens of appreciation for their service, according to EIU’s official event listing. Those veterans who wish to be seated on stage during the ceremony must register by November 2 to ensure their placement is reserved, a deadline designed to help organizers coordinate the special seating arrangements.
Following the formal program, a reception will be held in the same location for veterans and guests, with refreshments served. This informal gathering provides an opportunity for community members to interact with service members in a less structured setting after the ceremonial proceedings conclude.

While WAND refers to the venue as the Dvorak Fine Arts Building, EIU’s calendar identifies the precise space as Dvorak Concert Hall within the Doudna Fine Arts Center at 1860 7th Street, Charleston, Illinois 61920. Parking is available in the lot directly connected to the Doudna Fine Arts Center, as well as in two additional lots located on the east side of the building along 9th Street.
For questions regarding the school’s participation, contact Michael Pitcher at [email protected]. EIU’s point of contact is Josh Norman, reachable at [email protected] or 217-581-6077. Additional details and calendar integration options are available through EIU’s official event page.
The timing of the ceremony aligns with the national observance of Veterans Day on November 11, a date that marks the anniversary of the armistice ending World War I. By holding the event at 9 a.m., organizers ensure that middle school students can participate during the school day while still allowing veterans and community members to attend before the workday progresses.
