Final Fantasy Resonance Launches October 22 With Free Demo Available

Square Enix is launching Final Fantasy Resonance across multiple platforms on October 22, bringing the franchise into the HD-2D era for the first time. A free demo covering the entire first chapter is available now, and save data carries over to the full release.

Journey into Grandshelt: Rebuilding Brave Exvius for Consoles

The upcoming title is based on the first story arc of the smartphone game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which ended service in North America in October 2024 and in Japan in October 2025. Rather than a simple port, Square Enix has rebuilt the project as a full-fledged console-quality role-playing experience. The story centers on the peaceful kingdom of Grandshelt, where the power of crystals sustains prosperity until the magical barrier of the Earth Shrine begins to wane.

Airship squadron commander Rain and his deputy commander Lasswell receive a royal decree to investigate the disturbance. Inside the shrine, they encounter a mysterious adversary clad in black armor known as Veritas of the Dark, who shatters the Earth Crystal and leaves their airship wrecked. After returning to find Grandshelt under attack and rescuing the king, Rain and Lasswell set out alongside a mysterious girl named Fina to protect the remaining crystals scattered across the world.

Platforms, Editions, and Pre-Order Pricing

Final Fantasy Resonance releases on October 22, for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store on Windows, priced at $49.99. Square Enix is also offering a Digital Deluxe Edition for $59.99 that includes bonus in-game items, as well as a Collector’s Edition.

The Collector’s Edition bundles the digital deluxe bonuses with an artbook, a soundtrack, and a promotional Final Fantasy Trading Card Game card. Meanwhile, the Digital Deluxe Edition features items designed to aid players at the start of their journey, including potions, ethers, phoenix downs, an Archwitch’s Grimoire, and a Magitek Armor Key that grants a magitek armor appearance to chocobos. Pre-orders include an in-game weapon, armor, and a magitek airship passkey.

Square Enix confirmed that there is no upgrade path from the Nintendo Switch version to the Nintendo Switch 2 edition, and save data from the original Switch version is not transferable to the Switch 2 version.

Dynamic HD-2D Visuals and Franchise Cameos

The title marks the first time a Final Fantasy game utilizes the HD-2D visual style, blending detailed pixel art with dynamic camera angles, modern lighting effects, and three-dimensional models. Director Hiroto Furuya and producer Keisuke Nakashima discussed the aesthetic during interviews, noting that the development team experimented with voxels and layered 2D effects before settling on HD-2D as the most suitable way to represent the game’s cinematic sequences.

Beyond its core cast, the game incorporates classic franchise elements including airships, espers, and moogles, alongside character cameos that serve as summonable Visions. Promotional trailers have highlighted appearances by Clive from Final Fantasy XVI, Squall from Final Fantasy VIII, Firion from Final Fantasy II, Cloud, Tidus, and the Warrior of Light. Additionally, Final Fantasy VII antagonist Sephiroth appears as a formidable boss opponent.

Strategic Combat, World Maps, and Fan-Made Quality-of-Life Updates

The combat system merges traditional turn-based mechanics with modern tactical features. Players can exploit enemy elemental weaknesses and use a Stagger system to break enemy defenses, seize extra turns, and unleash powerful Resonance attacks. Summoning Visions allows for deep party customization through unique skills and abilities.

The game also restores the classic world map exploration style largely absent since the transition from the PlayStation 1 to the PlayStation 2. Outside the main story, players can explore the Chamber of Arms, test their skills in a Colosseum with deadly monsters, and take on optional challenges against the wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh and Ultima Weapon.

Ahead of the full launch, community members have already begun refining the experience. After the public demo highlighted vague descriptions for in-game abilities, a Reddit user known as godofknife1 utilized datamining tools to examine over 1,000 skills in the game files and created a quality-of-life mod providing detailed stats for items and skills.

I checked the game files (datamining) and there are over 1000 skills. It’s overwhelming for sure, but at least I got it covered for Demo.

The mod clarifies critical rates, accuracy values, extra effects, and terminology, ensuring players can fully optimize their party strategies when the complete game arrives next month.
