Grizzlies Beat Blazers 124-103 as Injuries Hit Both Teams

The Portland Trail Blazers saw their season-opening winning streak snap on Thursday night as the Memphis Grizzlies secured a 124-103 victory. The contest turned on a second-half offensive collapse by Portland, compounded by injuries to rotation stalwarts Robert Williams III and Ja Morant, handing the Blazers their first loss of the campaign.

Defensive Intensity Fades After Halftime

The first half played out as a virtual deadlock, fueled by a noticeable shift in Portland’s defensive approach. Head coach Micah Nori clearly addressed the roster following a defense-free outing against the Los Angeles Lakers, prompting the Blazers to get back in transition and aggressively disrupt fast-break opportunities.

That commitment lasted exactly two quarters. Memphis overwhelmed Portland in the second half, running them ragged to finish with 23 fast-break points—surpassing the 22 fast-break points the Lakers put up just days prior. Portland’s early paint defense told a similar story. Donovan Clingan patrolled the middle effectively against a traditional center like Zach Edey, blocking five shots and holding the Grizzlies at bay early.

Yet, protecting the interior left Portland dangerously exposed on the perimeter. Memphis shot 43 percent from three-point range, maintaining that efficiency across the entire night. Meanwhile, the Blazers struggled mightily from deep, finishing 12-for-49 (24 percent). Damian Lillard shot 1-for-9, Scoot Henderson went 1-for-5, and Deni Avdija finished 1-for-4, resulting in an 18-point differential from beyond the arc alone.

Free Throw Discrepancies and Morant’s Injury Exit

Portland actively pressured the Memphis defense by driving into the lane rather than settling for contested jumpers. This aggressive penetration forced a 26-12 free-throw advantage for the Blazers. Unfortunately, they converted just 65 percent of those attempts, turning a 14-shot edge at the charity stripe into only five actual points.

Ja Morant dictated much of the early tempo for Memphis, relying on his trademark mid-range pull-ups and short-range teardrops to stretch Portland’s defense. Just as the Grizzlies seized control, Morant came up hobbled and exited the game with a left hamstring injury after logging 23 minutes. He finished with 14 points and three assists on 6-for-14 shooting, outpacing Damian Lillard’s nine points on 3-for-13 shooting on a difficult night for both starting backcourts.

Halfcourt Turnovers and Bench Struggles

Ball security emerged as an old problem for the Blazers. While their offensive sets functioned reasonably well, players repeatedly dribbled into tight defensive coverages instead of taking what the defense allowed. Portland committed 16 turnovers, which Memphis translated into 23 points.

The Portland bench experienced a rough outing after strong performances earlier in the season. Posting negative plus-minus rates across the board, the reserve unit failed to produce a single double-digit scorer. Across 101 combined minutes, nine bench players combined for 10 turnovers, 15 rebounds, and just 8 assists. Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson combined to shoot 5-for-15.

Sidy Cissoko provided a notable exception through sheer energy, recording four points, six rebounds—four of them offensive—two assists, and a steal in 19 minutes. Deni Avdija led the Blazers with 24 points as the only Portland player to cross the 20-point threshold, while Cameron Boozer and Isaiah Stewart paced Memphis with 18 points apiece.

The Blazers look to rebound on Saturday during a noon matchup against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City.
