Both teams entered the matchup with identical 6-1 records. James Madison stepped onto the field as the defending region champions, while South Lakes arrived armed with veteran experience and explosive playmakers. By the final whistle, the Seahawks climbed out of a high-stakes battle, dropping the Warhawks to 6-2.

“This game is one of those district rivalries where it takes all 60 minutes to find a winner, and tonight, it was us,” said Seahawks linebacker Riggins Legler, as reported by Fairfax Times. “This game showed us that we just have to keep the hustle up and play with more intensity the rest of the way.”

Offensive Fireworks Paint the First Half

The scoreboard barely had time to rest as both offenses traded blows from the opening whistle. Joshua-Benjamin Dagbe set the tone early for South Lakes, hauling in a screen pass from quarterback Christian Wyatt and racing 65 yards to the house.

James Madison answered immediately through the ground game. Senior running back Will Smoot broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run to tie the game. Wyatt countered right back with another scoring drive, pushing the lead to 14-7 before a safari-themed South Lakes student section and James Madison’s Neon Crew.

Wyatt extended the lead to 20-7, though the Warhawks managed to block the subsequent point-after attempt. Warhawks quarterback Lucas Vacaflor answered the pressure by unleashing a deep ball to Nicky Cerefice, who accelerated downfield for a touchdown that trimmed the deficit to 20-14. Wyatt added his third touchdown of the evening shortly after, though a missed two-point conversion left the score at 26-14 heading into halftime.

Second-Half Adjustments and Defensive Stops

After the intermission, the home side took control. Madison took the opening kickoff of the second half but turned the ball over on downs after failing to convert on fourth down. South Lakes capitalized instantly.

Senior Nick Piccarelli stepped into a trick-play role, launching a touchdown pass to Dagbe to stretch the lead to 33-14. “When I caught the swing pass, I just saw Josh down the field standing free, and I just threw it to him,” Piccarelli told Fairfax Times. “This is a big win for our guys, and those guys across the way are a respectable program.”

Trailing by 19 points, Madison mounted a resilient comeback. Smoot punched in another rushing touchdown and later broke loose along the sideline for a 57-yard score, narrowing the gap to 33-28. The surge put the Reston crowd on edge until the Seahawk defense stiffened. Crucial interceptions by Collin Wall and Cameron Soto snuffed out the threat, and Wyatt capped his six-touchdown night by finding Dagbe once more to seal the victory.

“We’re all chasing dominance and tonight was a big win for our group,” Wall said. “The critic doesn’t count; credit belongs to the man who is in the arena, and we were the man tonight.”

Looking Ahead in the District Schedule

The grueling district schedule leaves little time for recovery. South Lakes faces a matchup against Centreville before closing out the regular season with a showdown against Westfield. Meanwhile, Madison prepares to take on Oakton tonight before squaring off against Centreville to round out their regular season slate.
