Sanford Breaks the Tie as Houston Downs Cincinnati 31-24
Houston running back Re’Shaun Sanford punched through a 51-yard touchdown run with 5:10 left on the clock, breaking a tense 24-24 tie and sealing a 31-24 victory for Houston over Cincinnati at TDECU Stadium. The sequence unspooled after Cincinnati running back Zylan Perry dropped a swing pass on the ensuing possession, which officials ultimately ruled a fumble. The Cougars recovered, drained the remaining two minutes off the game clock, and walked away with their seventh win of the season.
The loss drops the Bearcats to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in the Big 12, while Houston improves to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Cincinnati head coach Scott Satterfield pointed directly to the game’s sole critical turnover as the deciding factor in a contest where his squad clawed back from a 14-0 first-half deficit.
“I told our guys on Friday night that it is going to come down to who plays the cleanest. If you look at the stats, we had the turnover and they didn’t have any. I think that’s the difference in the game,” Satterfield said.
A Resilient Bearcats Comeback Falls Short
Houston quarterback Conner Weigman kept the Cougar offense humming early, finishing the night with two passing touchdowns and a rushing score, while Sanford racked up 126 yards on the ground. The home team jumped out to a fast 14-0 advantage before Cincinnati began assembling a response. A methodical 13-play, seven-minute drive ended with a Cole Tabb touchdown catch, followed by a fourth-and-one defensive stop that set up a Bearcats field goal to narrow the gap to 14-10.

The Cougars answered before halftime to stretch the lead to 21-10, but Cincinnati immediately seized momentum coming out of the locker room. Junior tight end Gavin Grover hauled in a 34-yard catch for his first career touchdown, capping an 80-yard opening drive of the second half to make it 21-17.
Tribute to Cincinnati’s offensive grit came with a heavy physical price. Tabb finished with 60 rushing yards on 12 carries alongside 34 receiving yards and a score, but he was knocked out of the game with an injury on the very first drive of the third quarter. Later in the fourth quarter, wide receiver JV Gibson suffered a head injury while tracking a catch in the end zone. Medical personnel stabilized Gibson on the field, placed him on a stretcher, and transported him to Memorial-Hermann Texas Medical Center. He was alert and moving all extremities prior to transport.
Cincinnati Ties Game with Grueling Touchdown Drive
Trailing 24-17 entering the final quarter, Cincinnati pinned its hopes on a grueling 16-play, 96-yard march—their longest drive of the season. The possession featured high-stakes drama when Houston defensive back Jordan Allen was kicked out of the game for targeting. Quarterback JC French, who accounted for all three Cincinnati scores with two through the air and one on the ground, finished the marathon drive himself with a two-yard quarterback keeper on second-and-goal to knot the score at 24-24.
That deadlock lasted mere moments. Sanford found a seam on Houston’s next major drive and broke free for his 51-yard scoring dash, providing the decisive 31-24 margin.
Cincinnati hits the road again next week looking to stabilize its conference standing as the November schedule tightens, while Houston aims to protect its spot near the top of the Big 12 ledger.
