Hydraulic Jacks Scattered on US 60 in Mesa Damage Over a Dozen Vehicles

Mesa Freeway Debris Incident Damages 13 Vehicles on US 60

Law enforcement officials are seeking community assistance following an early Thursday morning incident where fallen hydraulic jacks left across an East Valley highway damaged more than a dozen vehicles. Emergency personnel received calls to the vicinity of US 60 close to Dobson Road in Mesa right before 5:30 a.m.

Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers responded to reports of heavy debris in the middle of the eastbound lanes. The hazard was later identified as three black and silver hydraulic jacks, each measuring 4 to 5 feet long and weighing about 150 pounds. Several motorists struck the equipment, which created secondary hazards for trailing traffic.

Vehicles Struck and Damage Sustained

Troopers said a white SUV was initially struck after a semitruck kicked up the heavy debris. A white sedan sustained undercarriage and wheel damage after running directly over the jacks, while a blue SUV changing lanes for an upcoming exit also hit the equipment, damaging its wheels and tires.

Two damaged cars involved head collision street vehicles sustained significant front end damage debris scattered around

DPS confirmed at least 13 vehicles suffered flat tires as a result of the roadway hazard, and three other vehicles sustained enough damage to require towing.
