The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department rolled out a custom mobile gaming trailer designed to help officers build positive relationships with local youth in welcoming spaces across Marion County, axios.com reported. Unveiled on Thursday, the project was made possible by a $100,000 Legacy Impact Grant from the Indianapolis Rotary Foundation awarded to the Central Indiana Police Foundation, according to wrtv.com.
Funding the Gaming Trailer and Youth Programs
Of the $100,000 grant from the Indianapolis Rotary Foundation, exactly $50,000 was earmarked specifically for the purchase and customization of the video gaming trailer, axios.com reported. The remaining $50,000 funds youth programming, including the Gang Resistance Education and Training summer camp. Erin Smith, president of the Indianapolis Rotary Foundation, noted to wrtv.com that the initiative offers an innovative way to connect children with those who serve and protect the community.
Planning for the unveiling took nearly two years, wrtv.com reported. The trailer itself comes equipped with televisions, video game consoles, and comfortable couches, creating a low-pressure setting where officers and kids can interact during district community days and school visits.
Bridging the Connection Gap in Marion County
Lt. Allen Tuttle of IMPD’s Community Engagement and Outreach Bureau explained that the department has historically struggled to reach certain demographics of young people. “We’ve missed the mark on connecting with a lot of age groups of the youth in our community,” Tuttle told wrtv.com, adding that the trailer acts as a barrier breaker in neighborhoods with less police interaction.
Research shaping IMPD’s new strategic plan revealed that community members and department employees alike sought alternative interventions for incidents involving young people. Tuttle emphasized to axios.com that prevention, mentorship, and relationship-building are just as vital to public safety as traditional enforcement.
Eight-year-old Camilla Coleman described the experience to wrtv.com after trying out the trailer, calling it fun and joyful.
Balancing Play with Educational Programming
While the primary objective is establishing lasting trust, the department also intends to integrate educational elements. IMPD plans to screen educational videos covering various topics inside the trailer to prompt conversations in a secure environment, according to wrtv.com.

Beyond community outreach, strengthening these youth bonds could aid long-term recruitment efforts. Research cited by axios.com noted that ongoing staffing shortages directly impact officer morale and the department’s crime-reduction capabilities, threatening long-term sustainability.
However, IMPD’s broader modernization efforts through technology have faced hurdles. Alleged misuse of the department’s Flock automated license plate reader system resulted in fraud and official misconduct charges against five current and former officers, axios.com reported. In response, IMPD instituted tighter access requirements and daily auditing, while a General Order codifying those rules remains under consideration after the General Orders Board tabled it last month due to public questions.
