Executive Leadership Academy Curriculum | UI Health Care

UI Health Care released the comprehensive curriculum for its Executive Leadership Academy, establishing a multi-session program designed to align institutional strategy, operational systems, and leadership development across UI Hospitals & Clinics, the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and UI Physicians.

Strategy, Finances, and System-Wide Structures

The Academy maps its training across seven core thematic modules.

Beginning with an exploration of organizational strategy and system-wide structures, Session 1 examines the overarching UI Health Care Strategic Plan, operational core values, the relationship between the health system and the state of Iowa, finances, system structures, and external partnerships including Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs).

It also addresses the organizational architecture linking the College of Medicine and UI Physicians, alongside frameworks for leading institutional transformation.

Lean Principles and Operational Execution

Moving from broad strategy to tactical execution, Session 2 introduces the Lean Improvement Model.

Participants engage in hands-on simulations applying Lean principles to daily problem-solving, project scoping, process improvement, and the elimination of operational waste.

Building on operational execution, Session 3 centers on project execution and administrative management under the banner of managing people and processes.

Topics span organizational alignment, change management, project planning, time management, team management, meeting management, and quality control.

Clinical Standards and Healthcare Business Operations

Operationalizing clinical and administrative standards forms the core of Session 4, which targets quality, safety, and service.

The curriculum covers evidence-based practices, program evaluation, quality cultures, legal considerations, service excellence, negotiations, patient safety, and finance and marketing integration.

Session 5 breaks down the business side of medicine.

The module addresses financial statements, cost accounting, revenue cycles, budgeting processes, business plans, incentive structures, the role of philanthropy, data methodology, healthcare innovations, community engagement, and financial planning.

Team Dynamics and Final Project Presentations

The interpersonal and psychological dimensions of leadership are addressed in Session 6.

Focusing on personal development and team dynamics, the session covers conflict management, maximizing talent, building trust, employee engagement, resilience, remote work management, coaching, accountability, and leadership assessments.

The Academy concludes with Session 7, requiring participants to integrate their coursework into a formal project presentation reflecting the work completed throughout the multi-session program.
