Indiana Sweeps Hawkeyes in Bloomington

The University of Iowa volleyball team dropped a straight-sets decision to No. 21 Indiana on Friday night, falling 25-17, 25-19, 25-12 at Wilkinson Hall. The loss brings Iowa’s overall record to 13-14 and leaves the team at 2-11 in Big Ten conference play.

While the scoreboard reflected a dominant performance by the Hoosiers, the match featured several individual milestones and statistical shifts for the Iowa roster. Ksenija Tomic reached a significant marker during the third set, recording her 200th kill of the season. Additionally, Nikolija Bulatovic saw her longest run of the season, entering late in the first set and finishing with career highs of 13 assists, four kills, and four digs.

The defensive unit also saw a change in personnel, with Allison Berent making her first start at libero this season. Berent led the Hawkeyes in defensive production, recording a career-high 17 digs.

Momentum Shifts and Scoring Runs

Iowa actually began the match with competitive energy, capitalizing on early errors by Indiana to take a 10-8 lead in the first set. This 4-0 run, fueled by kills from Hannah Whittingstall and Liv Mogridge, briefly forced an Indiana timeout. However, the Hoosiers regained control with a 7-0 run to lead 15-10, eventually closing the set 25-17.

The second set followed a similar pattern of early Iowa resistance followed by Indiana surges. The Hawkeyes jumped to an early 3-0 lead, aided by a Whittingstall ace and a setter dump from Bulatovic. Despite the early lead and a period of back-and-forth play that saw Iowa trailing by only one point at 15-14, Indiana utilized a 5-0 run to pull away. Although Whittingstall, Bulatovic, and Mogridge helped Iowa narrow the gap to 23-19, Indiana secured the final two points to take the set 25-19.

The third set proved most difficult for the Hawkeyes as Indiana established a commanding 9-1 lead. Iowa utilized both timeouts to attempt a comeback, briefly cutting the deficit to 14-7 through a Tomic kill and a Whittingstall block. The effort was short-lived, as Indiana responded with a 5-0 run to extend the lead to 19-7. A late 3-0 push by Iowa, capped by blocks from Meitzler and Whittingstall, was not enough to stop Indiana from closing the match 25-12.

At the net, the blocking duties were distributed among Jenna Meitzler, Liv Mogridge, and Hannah Whittingstall, who each recorded two blocks.
