JSMC to Build Parts for US Navy Virginia and Columbia Submarines

The Joint Systems Manufacturing Center (JSMC) in Lima, Ohio, is expanding its industrial footprint to include the production of components for the U.S. Navy’s Virginia- and Columbia-class submarines. This shift sees the Lima plant partnering with General Dynamics Electric Boat through General Dynamics Land Systems to bolster the nation’s undersea fleet.

Stabilizing the Lima Workforce

The move comes at a critical juncture for the JSMC. While the facility continues its primary mission of producing Abrams tanks and Stryker vehicles, plant leadership admitted that normal production levels have seen a recent downturn.

Gary Hadding, the Plant Director of JSMC Operations, noted that this additional work provides a vital safety net for the local workforce. Instead of facing the instability of a production dip, skilled workers in Lima can now apply their expertise to shipbuilding efforts.

We’re experiencing a little bit a a downside now with our normal production. So, this is given an opportunity for our employees to stay here and be employed with this extra work brought into Lima. It’s a great opportunity for our skilled workforce here to be able to show their strength in supporting the shipbuilding, said Hadding.

Scaling from Small Parts to Rail Shipments

The partnership began approximately three months ago, with the JSMC initially tasked with assembling smaller components. However, the long-term trajectory for the contract suggests a scaling of operations. As the relationship with General Dynamics matures, the facility expects to handle larger internal parts that will require more personnel to manufacture.

Logistics will drive this growth. While current shipments move by truck, the JSMC is eyeing its existing rail infrastructure to handle the heavier components that the Navy requires for its submarines. Hadding emphasized that the intention is to maximize the volume of work the plant can perform for Electric Boat.

The transition has already cleared a major technical hurdle: certification. All JSMC welders have successfully passed the certifications required to build parts for Navy vessels.

The Strategic Stakes of the Virginia and Columbia Classes

The “so what” of this development extends far beyond the borders of Lima.

For the people of Lima, the impact is immediate. The JSMC isn’t just a tank factory; it is now a critical link in the U.S. naval industrial base. The shift ensures that high-precision welding and machining skills remain in the community even when the demand for armored vehicles wavers.
