K. Annamalai Launches ‘We The Leaders’ Foundation with Plans for Political Pivot
Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has officially launched his new movement, “We The Leaders,” signaling a transition toward forming a political party. Addressing his organization’s first major event, the “Drug-Free Pollachi Awareness Conference” held Sunday in Achipatti, near Pollachi, Annamalai confirmed that the foundation is intended to evolve into a political entity at an “appropriate time.”
This move follows Annamalai’s resignation from the Bharatiya Janata Party last month, a departure that has shifted the political landscape in Tamil Nadu. While emphasizing that the organization is not currently operating as a political party, Annamalai stated that the movement aims to foster a new political culture focused on governance, public responsibility, and social transformation.

Defining the Movement’s Scope and Philosophy
Annamalai stated that “We The Leaders” is not a family-run organization and that he operates as a volunteer alongside other members. He explicitly distanced the movement from an obsession with political power, framing its mission as a commitment to building a developed state.
“Our politics is focused on making Tamil Nadu a leading state. Responsibility is our identity,” Annamalai said during his address. He noted that the organization is not building its base through traditional membership drives but rather as a collective platform. He further clarified that the movement is not working against any specific political party or the ruling TVK-led government, stating that they intend to support the government when it stumbles rather than resorting to indiscriminate criticism.
Addressing his personal identity and the role of religion in his platform, Annamalai remarked, “Religion is outside the scope of this organization.” He added that while he is a proud nationalist and a Hindu, he believes in treating everyone equally. “When I step out, I lock up my caste and religion inside my house,” he said, asserting that a “true Hindu” does not view others as superior or inferior.
Youth-Driven Vision for 2031
An organization data snapshot provided by Annamalai highlights a membership base characterized by a significant youth demographic. According to the foundation:
* 54% of members are below the age of 39.
* 14% of members fall within the 18-25 age range.
* 17% of the organization’s members are women.
Annamalai credited young voters for the regime change seen in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which resulted in actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK emerging as the single largest party. He predicted that this same demographic would drive a “very big regime change” in the 2031 assembly elections.

Policy Focus and Social Initiatives
The “Drug-Free Tamil Nadu” conference served as the foundation’s first major public event, emphasizing social issues over electoral politics. Annamalai declared that the organization would observe July each year as a month dedicated to anti-drug awareness. During the conference, six resolutions were passed, including calls to halt the illegal sale of liquor and to close liquor outlets near educational institutions, bus termini, and places of worship. The roadmap for the movement includes a series of monthly awareness campaigns:
* August: Environment Month
* September: Women’s Safety Month
Additionally, Annamalai announced plans to plant 50 lakh trees over the next six months and to establish the “A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre of Excellence” on October 15, 2026.
