Keanu Reeves to Return for Animated John Wick Prequel Film About the Impossible Task

Lionsgate has officially greenlit an animated prequel film for its “John Wick” franchise, with Keanu Reeves set to reprise his role as the iconic assassin. The announcement was made during the company’s Thursday earnings call, confirming that the film will dramatize the “impossible task” that freed John Wick from his obligation to the High Table.

Production Details and Creative Team

The untitled animated film will be directed by Emmy winner Shannon Tindle, known for Ultraman: Rising and Kubo and the Two Strings. It will be written by Ryan and Kaz Firpo, the duo behind Marvel’s Eternals. Production is led by the core John Wick team: Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, franchise mastermind Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, and Keanu Reeves, who will also produce. Nathan Kahane serves as an executive producer, with Point Grey joining as a new producing partner.

Earning Freedom Through the Impossible Task

The film will go back in time to explore the story of John Wick before the events of the first movie, focusing on his completion of the “Impossible Task” to earn his freedom and the right to be with his love, Helen. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson praised the project, stating, “There is no John Wick story fans are clamoring for more than the Impossible Task. Shannon’s take on that story is an incredible one, and we are beyond excited to see what John Wick can do in animation.”
