Kristoffer Velde Brace Propels Portland Timbers Past St. Louis CITY SC

Kristoffer Velde notched a brace and added an assist, lifting the Portland Timbers to a 3-2 victory over St. Louis CITY SC at Energizer Park. The midweek win marks the second straight victory for Portland.

Wednesday night’s performance showcased an aggressive offensive rhythm for the Timbers. With this multi-goal outing, the club has now put up three goals in two straight matches, pushing their season total to 57. That tally stands as the fourth-most in Portland’s MLS history.

How the Goals Unfolded in St. Louis

The visiting side broke the match open late in the first half. In the 42nd minute, Kamal Miller initiated an attack from the back line, feeding a wide ball to Cole Bassett. Bassett took a touch before threading a pass down the left wing to Velde, who drove into the box and rifled a right-footed strike inside the far post.

Portland struck again just before the halftime whistle in the 45+3rd minute. Velde laid a short pass off near midfield, allowing Jimer Fory to advance the play with a first-touch ball down the left sideline. David Da Costa chased it down, sliced past his defender into the penalty area, and slotted a right-footed finish into the back of the net.

Velde struck for his second of the night just three minutes into the second half. Following a recycled ball outside the box from Da Costa, Velde lined up a shot from distance and hit the upper right corner of the goal, sealing his second brace of the 2026 campaign and bringing his total goal contributions for the year to 20.

St. Louis did not go quietly on their home turf. Daniel Edelman answered in the 58th minute with a header off a cross from Carlo Holse. Later, in the 90+1st minute, Rafael Navarro redirected a cross from Jeong Sang-bin just over the goal line to narrow the deficit to one, but the Timbers’ defense held firm despite Kamal Miller receiving a late red card.

The Road Ahead at Providence Park

With the three points secured on the road, the Timbers sit at an 11-14-7 record with 40 points, while St. Louis CITY SC holds a 14-9-9 mark with 51 points. Portland now turns its attention to the final home match of the season.
