San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the team explored a trade for former wide receiver Jauan Jennings before the deal fell through, explaining that Jennings ultimately decided he was “pretty happy” with his current situation in Minnesota. Shanahan clarified that while the 49ers had agreed on trade terms with the Vikings, the team needed to speak with Jennings directly before finalizing the move.
Shanahan’s Explanation on the Failed Trade
Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Shanahan detailed the team’s approach to the potential deal. We love Jauan. We have such a good relationship with Jauan, and we know him really well, and we didn’t want to do it without talking to him first,
Shanahan said. He explained that after the conversation, Jennings conveyed his contentment. He ended up saying that he was happy with where he was. It wasn’t just like a definite ‘no’ at first, but he was like, ‘man, Kyle, I’m pretty happy here and like and stuff,’ and when I heard the way he talked and where we’re at, I agreed with him.
Shanahan also addressed rumors that Jennings declined to participate, stating they spoke for an extended period after Jennings had returned to Tennessee to spend time with his family.
Jennings’ Performance with the Vikings
Jennings, who signed a one-year deal with Minnesota this offseason after spending his first five NFL seasons with San Francisco, has recorded six catches for 54 yards in six games. His production has been limited in the Vikings’ offense, which is ranked 31st in passing, despite the team’s 6-1 record. The team’s success has been largely driven by its elite defense, while the offense has lagged. Despite his reduced role, Shanahan discovered that Jennings remains engaged with the team’s success. One might believe that would lead Jennings to want out, but as Shanahan discovered, Jennings seems to be enjoying the Vikings’ success despite his lack of involvement,
according to the report.
49ers’ Search for Receiver Continues
With the trade for Jennings off the table, the 49ers will continue their search for help at the receiver position. The team has already lost Ricky Pearsall to a season-ending knee injury and is awaiting the potential return of Mike Evans from a Week 7 Achilles injury. Shanahan confirmed the team remains active in exploring options. They look every week to see who you can add week-in and week-out,” Shanahan said of San Francisco’s pursuit of an addition at receiver. “It gets bigger as the trade deadline comes, but J.J. was someone we knew, so someone we wanted to talk to if we went through with that and they were willing to do it at the time. We wanted to have a conversation with him knowing the guy. Receivers is something we still are looking into and so is every other position.
The 49ers could still target a receiver before the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
