Galaxy Rout Austin FC 4-1 to Keep MLS Playoff Hopes Alive
The pulse is weak and the breathing shallow, but the Galaxy’s playoff hopes are still alive and getting better. With a 4-1 win over Austin FC on Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park, combined with San José’s win over Real Salt Lake, the Galaxy head into the regular-season finale with a narrow path to guarantee a postseason spot.
To secure their berth, the team must beat or draw with Real Salt Lake on the road next weekend. Anything short of that means they no longer control their own destiny and require favorable results elsewhere. A similar scenario faces Real Salt Lake, which advances with a win in its final game but faces elimination with a loss or draw.
Now everyone’s season is on the line,
Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. It’s always good to go into the final week and know that you don’t have to be scoreboard watching. You’ve got to take care of your own business, and if you do that, you control your own destiny. That’s the one thing you definitely want. It’s on us.
A Long Sprint Up the Western Conference Standings
Getting to this point required a long, mad sprint. The Galaxy (11-11-11, 44 points) have lost only one of their last eight games. This surge makes them one of the hottest teams in Major League Soccer over the final seven weeks, lifting them from 12th place in the 15-team Western Conference standings up to seventh with one game left, pending weekend results.
Real Salt Lake (12-15-6, 42 points) has been equally formidable, carrying an unbeaten streak of five matches into Saturday. The Galaxy are finally getting healthy at the right time. The returns of Hirving Lozano and Joseph Paintstil from injury, alongside Marco Reus from illness, allowed the squad to field its strongest lineup of the season in front of an intimate Halloween gathering of 17,238 spectators.
When this group gets together and we can get them in sync, we [have] a team that could be very dangerous,
Vanney noted. If again we take care of business next week and we go into the playoffs, not a lot of teams are going to love seeing us across from them. That’s the opportunity that we’re seeking, right? Just the opportunity to go after this thing.
Scoring Breakdown Against Austin FC
The Galaxy took the lead for good in the 10th minute by overwhelming Austin. Four players rushed into the penalty area, setting up João Klauss for a right-footed shot from the center of the box. That strike marked Klauss’s 10th goal of the season, matching his career high in a career-low 16 games. It also maintained the team’s undefeated record when scoring first this season.
Just before halftime, Hirving Lozano doubled the lead with a header. Harbor Miller earned assists on both opening goals, bringing his total to three assists in his last three starts. Three minutes into the second half, Robert Taylor entered off the bench and immediately made it 3-0 by drilling a right-footed shot into the roof of the net off an assist from Reus.

Austin responded in the 54th minute when Ervin Torres curled a right-footed shot past Galaxy goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski from well outside the box. However, Sergi Roberto extinguished any comeback hopes in the 66th minute by capping the scoring with his first MLS goal, set up once more by Reus.
The performance pushed Reus to three assists for the match and a team-high 15 for the season, a career best for the player who twice recorded 13 assists during his Bundesliga career with Borussia Dortmund.
In the most recent games, we’ve been playing great football,
Lozano said in Spanish. We’re on the right track.
The Road Ahead to Decision Day
While the Galaxy wait out the remaining weekend fixtures—monitoring potential wins or draws by Colorado and Seattle—the locker room remains resolute. With 90 minutes left in the regular season, the players know the task ahead.
We have to play our best football from the first minute to the 90th minute,
Lozano said. I believe we’re going to advance.
