Leon County Volleyball Postseason Concludes Across FHSAA State Tournaments
Four Leon County high school volleyball programs competed in the regional rounds of the Florida High School Athletic Association state tournament, wrapping up competitive postseason runs across multiple classifications. The local playoff slate featured district championships, early regional exits, and one notable deep postseason push that carried late into October.
The postseason action unfolded rapidly across North Florida. The opening weeks of the tournament brought high-stakes district finales before regional brackets narrowed the field.
Chiles Captures District Title Before Upset Exit
Chiles entered the postseason as the two-time defending Class 5A state champions, looking to build on a 19-8 campaign. The Timberwolves secured their fifth consecutive district title on October 15 with a commanding 25-16, 25-11, 25-8 sweep of Leon. Senior Loganne Abernathy anchored the attack with 13 kills and a .520 hitting percentage, while setter Riley Boykin delivered 17 assists and sophomore Channing Savoy notched four aces.
That momentum hit a sudden wall on October 21. In the Region 1-5A quarterfinals, seventh-seeded Gainesville pulled off a stunning 3-2 upset over the second-seeded Timberwolves. Set scores told the story of a grueling battle: 20-25, 25-22, 13-25, 30-28, 15-13. Despite outscoring Gainesville 113-103 and holding a two-sets-to-one advantage, Chiles watched the match slip away as the Hurricanes clawed out a 30-28 win in the fourth set and a tight 15-13 decision in the fifth. Junior Sterling Carlile paced Chiles with 20 kills and 15 digs in the season-ending loss, Savoy added 12 kills, eight digs, and six aces, and Boykin contributed 24 assists.

The Chargers claimed the 1A District 1 championship by sweeping Wakulla 25-17, 25-13, and 25-17. Their run ended on October 20 in the Region 1-1A quarterfinals with a 3-1 loss to Covenant School of Jacksonville, by scores of 25-22, 19-25, 16-25, and 21-25.
