Matthew Schaefer Leads Islanders to Overtime Victory Over Wild

Schaefer Secures Overtime Winner as Islanders Edge Wild

Matthew Schaefer scored his second goal of the game on a wrist shot just 33 seconds into overtime, lifting the New York Islanders to a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night. The Islanders, who went 1-for-2 on the power play while holding Minnesota to 0-for-3, captured their second straight win to improve to 7-4-2 on the season. Minnesota dropped to 9-4-2, suffering its first home loss of the campaign after opening the year 4-0-1 at home.

The pace set early in St. Paul tested both benches immediately. Joel Eriksson Ek opened the scoring just 27 seconds into the first period with a wrist shot from the high slot. Schaefer answered for New York at 16:36 of the first, firing a wrist shot from the left circle off a rebound from Emil Heineman’s initial attempt. Bo Horvat pushed the Islanders ahead 2-1 at 1:41 of the second period, converting a backdoor tip-in off a feed from Simon Holmstrom during a power play. With the secondary assist on that sequence, Schaefer officially became the sixth teenage defenseman in NHL history to record 15 career multipoint games, joining a historic list featuring Phil Housley, Ray Bourque, Larry Murphy, Rick Hampton, and Rasmus Dahlin.

Late-Game Momentum and Roster Impact

Minnesota clawed back as Quinn Hughes cut through the right circle, beating goaltender Ilya Sorokin five-hole with a sharp-angle backhand shot at 17:21 of the second period to tie the game 2-2. Later in regulation, Matt Boldy leveled the score at 3-3 with 3:53 left on the clock, securing a point for the Central Division leaders before Schaefer’s overtime heroics. Wild head coach John Hynes addressed his team’s performance post-game, noting, I don’t think it was the cleanest game from us. We stuck with it, came from behind, and that’s what I talked to the team about. We didn’t have our A game tonight, but we gave ourselves a chance to win the game.

Bo Horvat praised the team’s mental resilience after surrendering the opening goal so quickly. We didn’t let it get us flustered, or let them keep taking it to us, Horvat said, adding that the group manufactured an immediate push right after the early deficit. On the other side, Minnesota’s Matt Boldy offered high praise for the young New York defenseman, remarking, He’s a heck of a player, for sure. He showed it tonight. I don’t think we did a good enough job of slowing him down, making his life a little bit harder. But credit to him, he plays the game like he’s been playing for 10, 15 years.

Looking Ahead in the Schedule

Both squads return to action with little rest as the early-season positioning tightens. The New York Islanders return home to host the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, while the Minnesota Wild travel east to face the Washington Capitals on Sunday.
