Mike Elko Acknowledges South Carolina’s Surge as Aggies Prepare for Crucial Clash
As Texas A&M prepares to face a surging South Carolina team on Saturday, Aggies head coach Mike Elko painted a clear picture of the challenge ahead during his weekly press conference on Monday. Elko described the Gamecocks as “really, really hot right now, playing really good football,” and admitted his team certainly “has our hands full” for the upcoming matchup in Columbia, 247Sports reported.
For the Aggies (4-4 overall, 1-4 in SEC), this game represents a critical opportunity. For South Carolina, a victory would solidify their October turnaround. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium and will be televised on ESPN.
The Elko Breakdown: A Tale of Two South Carolinas
Elko’s analysis centered on the stark contrast between the Gamecocks’ performance in September and their recent dominance. He pushed back against the idea of a simple, sweeping explanation for their improvement.
“I just think each football game is kind of its own thing, right?” Elko said. “We want to make big, sweeping statements. I’ve said this on multiple occasions on this podium, it doesn’t work that way in modern football anymore.”
Instead, Elko pointed to a tangible change in execution. He noted that when South Carolina “protect the football, when they create explosive plays, they’re really, really good.” Over the last three games, they have done exactly that. Conversely, their struggles earlier in the season were marked by “turnovers and plays that they maybe wish they had back,” preventing them from achieving their desired results. This focus on ball security and explosive plays, Elko suggested, is the key to understanding their recent success.
The Sellers Effect: A Quarterback Playing at an “Elite Level”
At the heart of South Carolina’s resurgence is quarterback LaNorris Sellers. Elko was effusive in his praise for the 41-year-old signal-caller, noting his comfort level within the new offensive system has led to a significant improvement in his decision-making.

“I think probably more comfortable with the system,” Elko observed. “I think, obviously, new offense, new coordinator. I think as he’s gotten comfortable with what they’re asking him to do, I think his decision making has gotten a lot better. Obviously, playing right now at an elite level.”
Elko highlighted Sellers’ dual-threat capabilities, praising his ability to make “a ton of explosive plays in the throw game” and “with his legs.” He also pointed out the challenge of bringing Sellers down, a fact the Aggies have experienced firsthand. This improvement, Elko noted, extends beyond the quarterback to the entire offensive perimeter, which has grown more comfortable with their scheme.
The Briles Blueprint: Speed, Physicality, and a Top-Tier Run Game
Elko also dissected the schematic trademarks of the Gamecocks’ offense, run by offensive coordinator Kendal Briles. He identified several key elements that make the attack so difficult to defend, including the ability to “identify matchups” and create favorable one-on-one opportunities for their skill players.
“There’s a tempo element of it, for sure,” Elko explained. “Certainly, there’s a hidden physicality… But I think there’s a physicality to it that they pride themselves in, and I think they’re starting to get that to the level they wanted at South Carolina, too.”
Perhaps most surprising is the fact that this high-flying, up-tempo offense also leads the Southeastern Conference in rushing the football. Elko summarized the challenge succinctly: “They’re up-tempo, they’re spread, they challenge you sideline-to-sideline, but they also lead the SEC in running the football. It’s a challenge, for sure.”

The Third Down Dilemma
Elko specifically pointed to South Carolina’s third-down success as a major concern for his defense. He noted that the Gamecocks are particularly effective at staying in “third and manageable,” a situation that maximizes Sellers’ unique ability to make a play.
“You get into third and four or less, and what he can do or what he can create, whether it’s because he’s carrying the ball or the threat of him carrying the ball, I think just creates a lot of challenges,” Elko stated, adding that he believes they are “third in the SEC” in third-down conversions. This ability to extend drives consistently puts immense pressure on an opposing defense.
