Mountaineer Food Bank Hosts Block Party to Plan Charleston West Side Site
Mountaineer Food Bank hosted a Halloween Social on Tuesday evening in the former Save-A-Lot parking lot at 748 Virginia St. W., bringing a block party atmosphere to Charleston’s West Side to gather community input for its new property. The event ran from 5 to 7 p.m., offering free food, fresh produce, a bounce house, and children’s activities.
Earlier this month, Charleston City Council approved the transfer of the former grocery site to the food bank. The expansion aims to boost the organization’s volunteer capacity and distribute more food to residents experiencing food insecurity.
Shaping the Future of the West Side Property
While the gathering featured festive holiday activities, the core mission focused on future planning. About half of the acquired building will house a Volunteer Center, leaving the remaining space open for community-driven ideas.
“We want to know from the community what they would like to see in the other half of our space, we want their feedback,” Mountaineer Food Bank Chief Growth Officer Amy Fauber said.
Organizers reported a strong turnout, with nearly 100 people attending the evening event. Attendees who completed a survey received their choice of a gift card to Miss Ruby’s Corner Market or the Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority, known as KRT. Officials expected to distribute most, if not all, of the fresh produce brought to the location.
Local Nonprofits Provide Food Relief to West Side Residents
The event was a collaborative effort between Mountaineer Food Bank and Charleston-based nonprofit Step by Step, alongside other local organizations. The Charleston Office of Public Art contributed by hosting a children’s craft table.
Beyond collecting ideas for the property’s long-term use, the block party provided immediate food relief to West Side residents. Fauber noted the positive response from the neighborhood as the organization works to integrate the new facility into the local framework.
