New Orleans Holiday Magic: Celebration in the Oaks Returns to City Park

New Orleans City Park reported that Celebration in the Oaks will return this holiday season, running from November 27, 2026, through January 1, 2027, with expanded light displays and reimagined experiences. The annual tradition, which has drawn crowds since the 1980s, brings more than 185,000 visitors annually to walk or drive beneath the park’s historic live oaks illuminated by over one million twinkling lights.

For the tens of thousands of families who anchor their December routines around the park’s glowing pathways, the upcoming run brings both familiar favorites and notable footprint expansions. City Park Conservancy (CPC) President and CEO Rebecca Dietz noted the deliberate balance between cherished nostalgia and fresh holiday attractions.

“Each year, we look for new ways to bring the magic of the season to life while preserving the traditions our community loves,” Dietz said. “This year’s additions reflect that commitment, creating even more opportunities for families and friends to make lasting memories in City Park.” CPC President

Expanded Driving Tours and Roosevelt Mall Uplighting

Drivers will notice a significantly larger route this year. The expanded Driving Tour now features 45 distinct exhibits along Palm Drive. Among the new sights is a Mardi Gras-inspired tree display complete with a purple, green, and gold light curtain and six-foot beads, blending local culture directly into the seasonal illumination.

Pedestrians walking the grounds will find similar updates. The Walking Tour introduces several fresh photo opportunities, including a brilliantly illuminated ancient live oak, an 18-foot walk-through mushroom, a 22-foot pure-white prism tree, and a reimagined Peppermint Post Office. Overhead, Roosevelt Mall receives enhanced uplighting, using thousands of new bulbs to accentuate the sprawling branches of the park’s iconic live oaks.

Riding The Holiday Express and Community Access

Passengers aboard The Holiday Express, presented by Ochsner Children’s, will encounter updated lighting and returning animated figures along the train route. Riders can spot the Three Little Pigs, Mama Duck and Her Ducklings, and a towering 40-foot, three-dimensional “I Heart City Park” sign.

Beyond the standard schedule, CPC organizes several targeted access programs. Value Nights are scheduled for November 29 and December 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, and 17, offering reduced admission prices of $25 for Driving Tours and $20 for Walking Tours—a $15 discount. For cyclists, Bike Nights run from November 30 to December 3 at $8 per rider, featuring a dedicated Pedal Pit Stop at 1 Palm Drive for refreshments and seating. Additionally, the Celebration in the Oaks Community Ticket Program, supported by Ochsner Children’s, provides complimentary admission tickets to eligible non-profit community organizations.

Funding the Park’s Future Through Holiday Magic

While the lights provide seasonal cheer, the operational stakes for the park remain substantial. As the organization’s largest annual fundraiser, Celebration in the Oaks generates nearly 10% of the park’s total operating budget, directly funding routine care, horticulture maintenance, and security across the grounds.

“What’s especially meaningful about Celebration in the Oaks is that the tradition gives back to the very place that brings us together,” Dietz said. “Every visit helps support the care of City Park, ensuring it remains a welcoming place for our community to enjoy throughout the year and for generations to come.”

Special ticket options include the Dasher Pass, which offers expedited Driving Tour entry for an additional $40, while Friends of City Park Members receive one free pass. Adults seeking an early look can attend Jingle Bells and Beer on Saturday, November 21, for an exclusive preview featuring open beer bars and live entertainment, ahead of early public light viewings in Carousel Gardens and Storyland.
