NM State Edges Southern Utah 64-63 After Wrong-Basket Blunder

Two Players Score for the Wrong Team in Friday Basketball Blunders

In basketball, the geometry of the court is usually second nature to a collegiate athlete. However, this past Friday in Las Cruces, New Mexico, that instinct momentarily failed two different players in separate games, leading to a pair of rare, high-profile errors that quickly made their way onto sports highlight reels.

According to ESPN, the incidents involved players from New Mexico State and Northwestern State, both of whom inadvertently scored layups at the wrong end of the floor. While these types of mistakes are exceptionally uncommon at the Division I level, they served as a stark reminder of how quickly the pressure of a live game can disrupt a player’s spatial awareness.

The Final Seconds at New Mexico State

The situation for the New Mexico State Aggies was particularly tense. With only 20 seconds remaining in their matchup against Southern Utah, the Aggies were trailing by a single point. In a desperate scramble for possession, Emma Christiano of New Mexico State managed to steal an inbound pass. She drove toward the basket, uncontested, and laid the ball in. The play-by-play announcer immediately shouted, “Aggies lead!”

The celebration was premature. The basket was on the wrong end of the court, effectively extending Southern Utah’s lead to three points. Despite the error, the game did not end in defeat for the Aggies. New Mexico State’s Stacy Chovino managed to score the game’s final two baskets, including a correctly oriented layup with just two seconds left on the clock, securing a narrow 64-63 victory for the team.

Northwestern State’s Early Quarter Struggle

About an hour before the drama unfolded in Las Cruces, a similar lapse occurred during the Northwestern State game against Arkansas. Early in the first quarter, the Lady Demons were attempting to break the opposing team’s press. Karma Wynn received a bounce pass from a teammate while positioned under her own basket. Finding herself wide open, she went up for a layup, only to realize too late that she was attacking the wrong hoop.

As reported by sports.yahoo.com, that specific error put the Lady Demons behind by six points. Unlike the New Mexico State contest, this game did not see a late-game recovery for the team that committed the mistake; Northwestern State ultimately fell to Arkansas with a final score of 89-59.
