Hawkeyes Sweep Defeat in Eugene Leaves Iowa Volleyball Searching for Answers

University of Iowa volleyball was swept by No. 12 Oregon at Matthew Knight Arena on Sunday afternoon, falling 25-23, 25-22, 25-15. The straight-sets defeat drops the Hawkeyes to 13-13 overall and 2-10 in the Big Ten.

The offense for Iowa ran primarily through the middle, paced by Hannah Whittingstall’s eight kills. Liv Mogridge and Ksenija Tomic chipped in six kills apiece, while Jenna Meitzler and Rosa Vesty added four each. Meitzler also directed the attack with 25 assists, adding two aces and one dig to round out a busy stat line.

Defensively, the Hawkeyes fought hard in the back row. Defensive specialist Allison Berent notched a season high with 12 digs, and libero Henlee Moszkowicz contributed 11. At the net, Iowa matched Oregon stride for stride with nine blocks apiece. Mogridge anchored that effort with seven total blocks, including two solo stops.

Set-by-Set Breakdown of the Match in Oregon

The opening frame set a competitive tone before slipping away. Oregon raced to an early 3-0 lead, but Iowa answered when Hallie Steponaitis and Whittingstall combined for a block. Whittingstall later sparked a rally with a quick sequence featuring a kill and an ace, narrowing the deficit to 12-9. A subsequent 4-0 spurt fueled by a Steponaitis kill, a Meitzler ace, and Mogridge’s net play brought Iowa right back into contention at the technical break.

Down 19-15 later in the set, Tomic answered out of a timeout with back-to-back kills. Iowa fought off three straight set points behind a Mogridge solo block, a Meitzler ace, and a Steponaitis kill, but a service error ultimately handed Oregon the 25-23 win. The Hawkeyes hit a sharp .320 in the opening frame, just shy of Oregon’s .353 clip.

The second set proved equally volatile, featuring nine tie scores and five lead changes. Meitzler opened with a dunk kill, and a subsequent Mogridge kill helped build an early 5-1 lead. Oregon clawed back to take a 9-8 advantage, but Iowa engineered a 4-0 run late to pull ahead 20-18. The Ducks responded instantly out of a timeout, closing on a decisive 3-0 run to take the set 25-22.

Final Struggles and Upcoming Conference Road Test

Oregon seized firm control in the third set. After falling behind 11-6, Iowa tried to mount a response when Vesty sparked a brief rally with a pair of kills to close the gap to 17-12. Consecutive Iowa errors stalled the momentum, allowing the Ducks to pull away and close out the set 25-15, securing the sweep.

The Hawkeyes now face a quick turnaround. Iowa travels to take on nationally-ranked Indiana on Friday night, with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Wilkinson Hall.
