The NBA Investigation into Aspiration Fund Adviser LLC

The league’s scrutiny centers on whether the Los Angeles Clippers circumvented salary cap rules. The NBA opened an investigation back in September into whether a $28 million endorsement contract between Leonard and Aspiration Fund Adviser LLC—a company that filed for bankruptcy earlier this year—broke league rules, following a report by journalist Pablo Torre. The probe is being performed by outside counsel, and there is no timetable for its conclusion. The league had no immediate comment on Thursday regarding the status of the investigation.
Toronto’s Decision to Await the Kawhi Leonard Trade Clearance

The Raptors and Clippers reportedly agreed to a trade centered around Kawhi Leonard on June 30. The Raptors confirmed their decision to wait for the investigation to conclude in an official statement released Thursday. The team’s front office noted that the league office had explicitly informed them that they would “assume the risk of any potential outcome of the investigation impacting Kawhi.”
“The NBA league office informed us that as a result of the ongoing investigation involving the Clippers, we would assume the risk of any potential outcome of the investigation impacting Kawhi,” the Raptors said. “In light of this, we will wait until the league’s investigation is complete.”
The Raptors emphasized their desire to proceed with the deal, which would bring the 35-year-old Leonard back to the franchise that helped him win the 2019 NBA championship. The Raptors agreed to send Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round draft picks, two second-round picks, and pick swaps to the Clippers for Leonard. Leonard, who turned 35 earlier this month, is a seven-time All-Star, seven-time All-NBA selection, and a two-time NBA champion. He is coming off the highest-scoring season of his career, averaging 27.9 points for the Clippers in 65 games.
“The Raptors remain eager to bring Kawhi back to Toronto and look forward to a swift resolution for our players, our organization, and our fans,” the Raptors said.
Peyton Watson’s Contract Negotiations with the Denver Nuggets

The ripple effects of this stalled trade extend beyond Toronto and Los Angeles. The Clippers were ready to start operating without Leonard’s monster $50.3 million salary on their books. That provided the breathing room for the Clippers to enter earnest contract negotiations with restricted free agent Peyton Watson.
As it stands, the Clippers appeared to be the only reported team earnestly trying to pry Watson away from the Denver Nuggets. However, because the Clippers and Toronto must wait indefinitely for further clarity on the NBA’s investigation, that time is inherently taken away from any ongoing Watson talks. The more time passes, the more likely the young forward is to accept whatever terms the Nuggets offer to keep him in Denver. This remains the case regardless of whether the trade is eventually finalized or whether the Raptors decide to back out once they see a possible punishment they are uncomfortable with.
Detroit Pistons Roster Adjustments Following the Trade Standoff
While the Raptors navigate the fallout, the Detroit Pistons have avoided a similar entanglement. Brian Windhorst of ESPN reported in June that the Pistons would be “in line” to acquire Leonard if the Clippers ultimately opted to trade him. Had the Pistons completed such a deal, their entire offseason would have been placed on hold.
The Pistons have already traded Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies and have been able to add shooters to their rotation, including John Collins, Isaiah Joe, and Taurean Prince. The team is still attempting to figure out the future for All-NBA center Jalen Duren. According to reports, the Pistons have been vindicated for not going all-in on the six-time All-NBA honoree, as their offseason is no longer shrouded in the mystery that the Raptors are currently attempting to navigate.
The Clippers, meanwhile, have been cooperating with the league. In a statement to ESPN, the Clippers noted: “For the past 10 months, our organization has fully cooperated with an NBA…” The Raptors’ offseason is effectively on hold until a ruling is made. If the investigation turns out positively for Leonard and the Raptors, Toronto would gain a two-time NBA champion and Finals MVP. If the trade is ultimately called off, the Raptors would have to return to the trade and free agency markets well after the big names have been signed by other teams.
