Real Madrid Close in on JJ Gabriel as Manchester United weigh legal options

JJ Gabriel is edging closer to Real Madrid. Manchester United have not been contacted by the Spanish club or the player’s family, the Irish Times reported.

The 16-year-old forward, son of former Republic of Ireland international Joe O’Cearuill, has been absent from Carrington since September. He requested his registration be cancelled days before his 16th birthday on October 6. He remains officially registered to United. He is working to secure a European Union passport to aid a move abroad, with a switch to the LaLiga champions lined up following interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The September Request That Froze a Career

United have not been contacted by the Spanish side or Gabriel’s representatives, the Press Association reported. The club is now ready to explore legal options against whichever club signs the teenager over possible broken regulations. Real Madrid have been contacted for comment.

A Hat-Trick in a 5-0 Debut That May Be His Last

Gabriel’s final appearance for United appears to have been a 5-0 UEFA Youth League victory over Sabah on September 10. He scored a hat-trick on his debut. His representatives were reportedly disappointed he was not registered to play later that day in the Champions League fixtures against the champions of Azerbaijan. He was due to appear in the Carabao Cup tie against Brighton the following week. He had already left the club by then.

Had he featured against Brighton, Gabriel would have become United’s youngest-ever player in a competitive match. He previously appeared off the bench in the August friendly against Atletico Madrid under Michael Carrick. Last season he became the youngest-ever winner of the club’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.

839,000 Followers, Then a Wiped Feed

The teenager’s Instagram account has amassed 839,000 followers. Recently he wiped his posts clean, though story updates show him doing individual training. He was included in the first-team squad photo published last month. His name appeared on the back of Tuesday’s Roma programme, despite being left out of the Champions League squad.

‘He’s a Young Boy’: Carrick on Welfare and the Standoff

United head coach Michael Carrick addressed the situation following the Brighton match in September. He stressed the club’s duty of care.

United head coach Michael Carrick said the club must be careful of the whole situation. He stated that as a club point of view, the biggest thing is looking after younger players – their welfare, their wellbeing, and their exposure. Carrick added that all of them involved in those conversations have to be really conscious of that.

United had initially hoped to persuade Gabriel to stay. The next milestone on record is the legal review United is prepared to launch, while Madrid await any formal approach.
