Rory McIlroy has defended Scottie Scheffler against criticism over the world’s top-ranked golfer’s limited international travel, stating that Scheffler’s choice to prioritize his family is his prerogative.
Speaking ahead of the DP World Tour’s Abu Dhabi Championship, McIlroy addressed the criticism directed at Scheffler. I’ve seen criticism of Scottie Scheffler because Scottie doesn’t play, but that’s his decision. If he doesn’t want to, that’s his prerogative. I think Scottie being Scottie is good enough for the world of golf and he doesn’t need to travel all over the world because he’s got a young family and that doesn’t bring value to his life,
McIlroy said.
McIlroy’s Personal Travel Preferences
McIlroy, who is known for his extensive international schedule, clarified that his own travel is driven by personal enjoyment rather than a sense of duty to the sport. I like travel; it’s all I’ve known. I’ve grown up on this tour. I’ve travelled the world since I was 16. I don’t know any different. That’s just what I like to do and it’s not out of any feeling of responsibility to the game or trying to be an ambassador. It’s just because I enjoy doing it,
he stated.
Rory McIlroy is making his 15th appearance at the Abu Dhabi Aldar Golf Championship. He has previously traveled to India for the first time last year and expressed his enjoyment of going to Australia and returning to the Middle East. Next month, McIlroy and his wife, Erica Stoll, are scheduled to fly to Australia for an extended stay, where he will play in the Australian Open and the Cathedral Invitational.
Opinion: It's time we start criticising Scottie Scheffler for his aversion to leaving America. He's letting the global game down. Read more: https://t.co/1YxnviDVgO pic.twitter.com/hPiw1ZcaYO
Scheffler’s Family-Focused Offseason
In contrast to McIlroy’s global itinerary, Scheffler’s offseason is centered on being home in Dallas with his wife, Meredith, and their two sons. Immediately when the season ends, the first thing I want to do is just spend the time at home,
Scheffler told People in an interview published June 17. The couple welcomed their second son, Remy, on March 27, and their older son, Bennett, turned 2 in May.
Scheffler has acknowledged a future desire to play in Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand is a place we would love to be able to go to. My wife has always wanted to go to New Zealand,
he said, though he has not set a date for such a trip. Scheffler’s young family shapes his current schedule, and he holds his time at home as sacred.

Media Challenges Scheffler’s Global Event Participation
Scheffler’s limited international travel has drawn criticism, including a column by Golf Monthly’s Nick Bonfield with the headline, It’s time we start criticizing Scottie Scheffler for his aversion to leaving America … Is he doing enough as a global ambassador?
The publication’s X post of the opinion piece has drawn significant engagement, with 1.3 million views, 831 comments, and 151 reposts.
This year, Scheffler played in 20 events, with only two held outside the United States—the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open Championship in England. When asked about a potential fall international schedule, Scheffler expressed interest. It definitely interests me. I’d like to see how it shapes out the next couple of years. There’s a lot of places I think I’d like to play. There’s always just the time and the place for me. I’m at a time in my life where I have a young family at home and young kids,
he said. Scheffler also mentioned that playing in Australia’s Sandbelt would be pretty special.
Contrasting Schedules
The world’s top-ranked golfer became a serious threat at Augusta National this year, finishing one shot behind McIlroy at the Masters in April as the two rivals compete during the PGA Tour season. McIlroy keeps going after the season ends, traveling the world with his wife, Erica Stoll, and also keeps playing on the European circuit. Scheffler, however, takes the opposite approach, with his offseason plan being simple: to be home in Dallas with his family. Those are times — the fall is a special time for our family. It’s where we can really check out and be together and I get to spend a lot of time with my kids. So I hold those moments pretty sacred,
he said. McIlroy’s passport is evidence of his global play; he has spent a few weeks in California and Florida and has also played in the United Arab Emirates, Scotland, England, Ireland and India this year. He’s also scheduled to play next month in the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.
