Sam Houston Cross Country Heads to Huntsville for 2026 Conference USA Championships

The Sam Houston men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to compete in the 2026 Conference USA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31, at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Alabama, gobearkats.com reported. The women’s 6K race will kick off at 9 a.m. CT, followed immediately by the men’s 8K event at 10 a.m. CT.

Both squads arrive at the postseason looking to climb the conference ladder after enduring tough finishes at last year’s title meet. During the previous championship cycle, the Bearkat men captured eighth place overall, while the women’s team crossed the finish line in 10th place.

Returning Standouts Lead the Bearkats

Mario Ruiz anchors the men’s lineup following a standout performance at last season’s championship meet, where he secured 13th place with a time of 24:16.25 and earned second-team All-CUSA honors. He will be joined by teammates Klever Torres, who finished 60th in 26:20.26 last year, and Anthony Perez, who followed closely behind in 61st with a mark of 26:20.83.

On the women’s side, Sophia Phillip paces the roster after leading Sam Houston with a 33rd-place finish in 21:38.63 at the previous conference meet. Zerah Martinez returns alongside her after taking 36th place with a time of 21:42.56.

Postseason Polls and Expectations

In the preseason coaches’ poll, the Sam Houston men grabbed the seventh spot in the rankings, while the women’s team starts the postseason slotted in 10th place. Saturday’s races will decide both individual event titles and the overall team championships for the 2026 season.
